SCHOOL MESSAGES

OJO! Last Family Update of the 2020-21 School Year

This edition is our last family update of the 2020-21 school year. Expect to receive an End of the Year message from our Executive Director, Kristin Scotchmer in a few weeks. Regular school communications will begin mid summer.

NEW! School Closed from Monday, June 28 - Monday July 5

To provide our year round staff with a well-deserved and needed break, both Mundo Verde campuses will be completely closed from Monday, June 28 through Monday, July 5. Our reception will not be staffed. Phone messages and emails will be responded to when our campuses open again on Tuesday July 6.

NEW! Thank You, Thank You, Thank You!! To All Families for a Successful Teacher & Staff Appreciation Collection

We want to share and celebrate that together, our parent communities raised $18,000 during the Teacher Appreciation Collection that ran from April 25 to May 23 across both campuses. This is truly heartwarming particularly given the hardships of this year.

The total funds collected will be equitably distributed among all staff at JF Cook and Calle Ocho - from the classroom teacher to the front desk staff and everyone in between - in the form of electronic gift cards as an End of Year Appreciation Gift, on behalf of all parents and caregivers.

Thank you for your contributions and support. This will serve as a nice way to wrap a challenging year for our staff and show the warm appreciation from our families.

FAMILY COMMUNICATIONS & ENGAGEMENT

NEW! Keep In Touch With Each Other!

To facilitate communication among families, Mundo Verde is structuring an inclusive and open WhatsApp group that is free for all enrolled families. Whether arranging playdates, discussing homework, or sharing ideas for fall, you will soon be able to communicate with all the families in your child’s grade.  This is a way to build connections with the same group of families throughout your child’s time at Mundo Verde, you will be invited to join based on the year your child/ren will be promoted.

Everyone will be invited to join. No one is required to participate. Everyone who joins will be asked to follow a basic protocol for respectful and inclusive communications.

Try it over the summer! Tell us what you think! Make some new friends!

Keep an eye out for an invitation coming to you soon.

UPDATED! Update from the Community Session June 16 - Calle Ocho Campus

Calle Ocho families met to get to know one another better by hearing from each caregiver which focus of Comunidad motivates them to be engaged (creating an intentionally inclusive community, involving all families' strengths, advancing equity, among others. The group also revised the working draft of Comunidad's mission and vision and heard from Principal Naomi about opportunities for the group to support the school community over the summer.

Next Comunidad development meeting is on June 30 from 8:00-9:30pm. Please contact our Kindred representative, Savannah Keith Gress at savannah@kindredcommunities.org, if you plan to attend and would like to learn more.

EXTENDED COMMUNITY

Tell DC Council: DC students need unprecedented support in the wake of COVID-19

Mayor Bowser has announced that her budget proposal will include a 3.6 percent increase in the uniform per student funding formula and makes positive increases for our students furthest from opportunity.

This is a strong start, but setting our students up for their #StrongestYearYet calls for an increase of at least 4 percent per student and equitable funding to our at-risk students and English Language Learners by increasing funding dedicated to those groups.

We need the Council to go further. Use the link in this website to urge your council members to build on the mayor’s initial proposed education investments so that our schools have the resources they need to provide an equitable recovery.

NEW! SY21-22 School Calendar Coming Soon!

We are currently in the process of collecting input from school leaders and the DCACTS union calendar committee to review and finalize the SY21-22 calendar. During this process we consider criteria such as:

  1. Number of days placed on the calendar to reflect our school’s compliance requirements, priorities, and school community values, including official holidays as well as student and teacher breaks.

  2. Religious holidays to honor the diversity of our community.

  3. Points of alignment and calendaring implications as it relates to DCPS calendar for the upcoming school year.

  4. Assessment cycles, as well as activities and events.

A final version of the calendar will be shared in the coming weeks. In the meantime, we offer below a list of key dates we have identified that can help inform summer and fall planning for families.

EXTENDED COMMUNITY

NEW!

HEALTH & SAFETY

NEW! Travel Reminder for Holiday Weekend, May 31

If your family is planning to travel for Memorial Day weekend, please do so safely and practice precautions, such as wearing a mask and hand hygiene.

Students enrolled on in-person learning who choose to travel outside of the DMV to a state or country on the DC Health high-risk list (here) MUST do the following process to return to in-person learning even without symptoms:

  • Unvaccinated or partially vaccinated individuals who have traveled to any place other than Maryland or Virginia must either

    • (1) not attend school for 10 days after returning, or

    • (2) not attend school for seven days after returning, get tested for with COVID-19 PCR test three to five days after returning, AND receive a negative COVID-19 PCR viral test. Even if the test is negative, the individual must still not attend school for seven days.

  • An individual who has tested positive for COVID-19 within the last 90 days or is fully vaccinated may be admitted immediately after domestic or international travel if they do not have any COVID-19 symptoms.

    • They should get a COVID-19 test three to five days after international travel

  • Any individual with symptoms consistent with COVID-19 must not enter the school building.

NEW! Clarification About Returning to School After Presenting COVID-19 Symptoms

In order to return to school in person after presenting symptoms consistent to COVID-19 or after traveling to a high-risk state or country, a negative PCR test is required. A rapid test will not be accepted. You are welcome to get a rapid test in addition to the PCR test however that result will not be accepted. Please include the email covid19@mundoverdepcs.org on any communication related to COVID. Apologies for any confusion related to this protocol.

NEW! Innovative Asymptomatic Testing Program for COVID-19

We are excited to announce that our school has been selected to participate in an innovative program to conduct asymptomatic testing for COVID-19 for the remainder of this school year with Shield T3. The Shield T3 COVID-19 is a saliva-based test developed by researchers at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and is now used in some Baltimore public schools and several universities in the Washington, DC area.

To read the full announcement shared with in-person learning families on Wednesday May 19, please click here: Innovative Program to Conduct Asymptomatic Testing for COVID-19 with Shield T3 at Mundo Verde

COVID-19 Asymptomatic Testing At BOTH Campuses

The Children's School Services team is now taking over asymptomatic testing also of students from the DC Department of Health at BOTH campuses. This transition may take a few weeks and your previously submitted consent forms should be honored. Following CDC testing guidelines, the nurse will only test 10% of the population. You will not be notified of a negative result, meaning if you do not receive a notification from Children's, your child tested negative. If your child tests positive, both you and the school will be notified of the result.

If your child is enrolled for on-campus learning, and you have not filled out the COVID-19 Testing Consent Form, you can find it in your enrollment packet.

Mundo Verde’s Mask Guidelines Are Not Changing

Our school is aware of the new guidelines surrounding wearing masks for individuals who are fully vaccinated. This is to reiterate that Mundo Verde's mask guidelines are not changing.

As a reminder:

  • All students and staff are required to wear a mask while on campus except for designated times such as lunch.

  • All visitors are required to wear a mask.

  • All families and authorized pick ups are required to wear a mask during arrival and dismissal.

  • Thank you for your cooperation in keeping our community safe!

SUMMER PROGRAM

NEW! Summer Program Updates

Families began receiving acceptance letters as of May 21. These letters are being sent by email. We thank you for your patience and understanding around prioritizing at-risk (city definition) and students with disabilities.

We are able to accept more than 120 students, and it is critical that families who wish to accept their invitations do so immediately by following the instructions indicated on their acceptance letter. Decisions are hard when there is more demand for a program than we can accommodate.

While we hoped to offer a virtual program for families who expressed interest, please know we are unable to do so due to lack of staffing. Instead, we will focus all our human resources on offering a high quality in-person summer program.  Please see information below about a virtual summer program offered by FLOC that is free for FARM eligible families.

If you have questions or require clarification, please reach out to Gloria Quirarte, our Director of Extended Day Programming at summer@mundoverdepcs.org.

NEW! Earth Month - Food Challenge!

Shoutout to all of the families who participated in and completed the 2021 Make the Most of Food challenge! We had 27 participants throughout the month and by the end of the challenge, families had some tips to share. Ms. Kiko avoided wasting foods like pea shoots, chives, and dill during this challenge by adding these ingredients to delicious frittatas! Yum!

Calle Ocho mom, Annie Wolfson, and her family make their own veggie stocks with carrot, onion, celery scraps. Annie boils the scraps (plus maybe a smashed garlic or two and a bay leaf) in a pot of water covering the pile of scraps by about an inch for at least an hour. Let cool, strain, and freeze for later use. Annie and her family also use a Solar Green Cone food digester for composting!

Ms. Carissa and her family eat a lot of avocados. Since avocado pits can take a long time to break down in the compost, Ms. Carissa propagates the seeds to regrow trees from the pits rather than composting them. These little trees make great gifts for friends! You can regrow lots of foods from scraps, like lettuce, celery, sweet potatoes, and more. Ms. Carissa and her family also save a lot of jars and cans. Glass jars make great drinking cups, vases, are excellent for food storage, and work really well for plant propagation.

If you want to learn more about composting and reducing your food waste, please reach out to Carissa Tidado-Marks, our school garden & sustainability coordinator, at ctiradomarks@mundoverdepcs.org, anytime and she will support you.

SCHOOL MESSAGES

NEW! Expansion Message from Our Executive Director, Kristin Scotchmer

Dear Mundo Verde Families and Caregivers,

The update below addresses six key aspects of our phased reopening process important for families and caregivers interested in knowing more about how we are expanding the number of students on campus each week. (For other related and regularly updated information, please also see our reopening website page). More than 455 of our 925 PreK to 5th grade students are now participating in on-campus learning. It is exhilarating to see smiling staff and students happy to be back in our buildings interacting with peers and participating in academic work and activities to expand social/emotional competencies.

One parent/caregiver captured well the excitement and relief of being back on campus:

“After going to the building and witnessing all the preparations the operations team has put in place to make hybrid and hubs work... I am so impressed! Huge shout out to the ops team!"

I want to thank every member of our community. Collectively, we have demonstrated enormous resilience and empathy in this incredibly challenging school year.

A sign of our continued opening, we are looking forward to celebrating our 5th graders with an in-person outdoor promotion ceremony. We will share more in the coming weeks as we finalize the details, which depend on the Mayor Bowser’s orders regarding large group activities and specifically promotion and graduations.

Please read a summary of Key Aspects of our phased reopening process HERE

NEW! Teacher Appreciation will be Celebrated Nationwide the Week of May 3-7!

QR Code.png

Mundo Verde families have an annual tradition of organizing activities and gifts for teachers and staff across the school during Teacher Appreciation Week. We are inviting all families across both campuses to contribute to the "Teacher & Staff Appreciation Collection" that will allow parents and caregivers to recognize all teachers and staff in an equitable manner - from the classroom teacher to the front desk staff and everyone in between.

We understand that this school year has presented us all with untold challenges, and that traditions and activities have been altered and disrupted. Recognizing the unique circumstances we are all living in, and understanding that not all families may be able to participate, we want to make sure that this Teacher and Staff Appreciation Collection is an option available for those families who would like to contribute this year.

The collection will be open from April 25 through May 23. Contribuciones can be made via the PayPal link https://www.paypal.com/donate?hosted_button_id=BZTU3KGNVU7JA&source=url  or by scanning the QR code. Funds collected will be distributed among teachers and staff in both J.F. Cook and Calle Ocho

Stay tuned for more information from your classroom liaisons too. If you have any questions, please contact Classroom Liaison Coordinators: For Cook Campus Kathrin Frauscher [kfrauscher@gmail.com] and Andrew Miller [andrew@amazonwatch.org]; for Calle Ocho Campus Lindsey Elman [lindsey.elman@gmail.com] and Diego Fernandez [diegochef@gmail.com]

NEW! A Message from Calle Ocho Principal, Naomi

Dear Mundo Verde Calle Ocho Families,

I hope that each of you had a restorative Spring Break!

We now have 9.5 weeks remaining in this whirlwind school year. We are now fully operating a hybrid model with about half of our student body on campus and all of our student body virtual. We are seeing many successes as well as areas for improvement for our virtual learning. Our academic team is dedicated to making the last two months of school dynamic and mission aligned for the wellness and academic success of every child.

Prior to Spring Break, I was able to meet with every teaching team to discuss the potential options for expanding. We considered student needs, classroom and teaching dynamics in the time of Covid, and the different ways we can positively impact students virtually and on campus.

HEALTH & SAFETY

Travel Recommendations During Spring Break

As students and staff continue returning to on-campus learning, it is important to clarify the expectations regarding travel during the pandemic. We ask families to limit traveling during Spring Break to reduce and limit the possible spread of Covid-19 in our school. If your family is planning to travel, please do so safely and practice precautions, such as wearing a mask and hand hygiene.

Students enrolled on on-campus learning (Learning Hubs and Hybrid Model) who choose to travel outside of the DMV to a state or country on the DC Health high-risk list MUST do the following process to return to in-person learning even without symptoms:

  • Quarantine for 14 days OR

DC Re-Open Schools Health & Safety Guidelines Update

On March 26,  DC Department of Health and OSSE released their new guidance for re-opening schools in the District. These guidelines can be found on OSSE’s public website. We are currently reviewing the guidelines to see which are inline with our re-opening values and how to operationalize new recommendations from a space, scheduling and staffing capacity lens.

The most impactful change is the guidance to reduce from 6 feet to 3 feet in certain instances the physical distance between students, which is in accordance with the new CDC guidelines, and the removal of the cap on 12 people per room.

The guidelines clearly state three instances that physical distance of 6ft are recommended:

  • Between adults and other adults

  • Between adults and children

  • Between children when masks are removed, such as lunch, snack time and nap. Physical barriers, such as plastic dividers, are not a replacement for the 6ft

We have been preparing for this change as part of our considerations for further expansion of on-campus learning and continue to consider analysis of square feet of space as part of how we define maximum room capacity.

We are currently analyzing our operations to incorporate both the new 3 foot and the 6 foot distance requirements on our campuses. We do not anticipate any other of our safety procedures adjusting for this year at this time, such as mask wearing, staggered arrival and dismissal, increased cleaning and hand hygiene, health screenings and intentional cohorting to reduce the number of close contacts.

FAMILY COMMUNICATIONS & ENGAGEMENT

Join Us for a Conversation with Parents/Caregivers of Black Students - April 19, 6:00pm

Families of Black Students at Mundo Verde are invited to join a virtual conversation to continue the discussion on our guiding question:

How do we center Black students in our short term and long term plans of action with a focus on school culture and student experience (e.g., recovery, reentry)  based on data (e.g. stakeholder, performance data, etc.), research and best practice?

An initial meeting took place on March 15. For our upcoming meeting, families from both campuses will be joined by Black leadership representing both campuses -- J.F. Cook Campus Interim Principal Netta Douglas, J.F. Cook Campus Acting Assistant Principal Jennifer Kouakeu, Network Director of Talent/General Counsel Robyn Pretlow, and teachers. We will recap some of the data shared in that meeting and discuss specific strategies to support the academic growth of our students.

SUMMER PROGRAM

2021 Summer Program Details

Mundo Verde will offer a limited summer program for approximately 100 students in person and 100 students virtually. The four week in-person program will consist of a program serving students in grades PreK3-5th grade including academic skill boosting in English, Spanish and Math. The program will serve approximately 100 students at the J.F. Cook Campus.  The program is open to all students across both campuses and will prioritize students who have extended year services (through Special Education) and students whose academic data show they need preference in the program.

We are accepting interest forms now in order to determine staffing for the program. Students will spend a portion of every week outdoors, exploring and engaging in physical activity and recreation.

There will be no shortage of FUN—it is summer after all! We will provide a few field trips as able.

  • Dates: July 8 - August 4

  • Times: 9:00am-3:45pm (with specific drop-off times between 8:30-8:55am)

  • Eligible students: The summer program is only open to rising Mundo Verde students from both campuses—returning in the 2021-2022 or in fifth grade. New students entering PreK-3 in the Fall are not eligible to participate in the program.

  • Registration: Registration is available for the entire session only (all four weeks). Up to 100 slots will be made available dependent on staffing. Registration will close once that number is reached or on May 1. Families will receive a confirmation when their request has been received, and a call or email once their spot is secure. The space is secured once the registration fee is received.

  • Notice about Fees: We are committed to continuing our mission-aligned summer programming and keeping it accessible for all of our families through a sliding scale. To that end, we will not increase our fees this year since we increased them by 5% in 2019 [1].

SCHOOL MESSAGES

NEW! Message from Dahlia Aguilar, Chief Schools Officer

As we enter April we are energized by the sun, the signs of life abound, and we know this is a season of planting that which we want to sow in the future.

Sustainability teaches us that a healthy and sustainable future is possible and that we are all in this together [1]. We thank you for helping us design what has been within our means and resources, while cultivating mutually beneficial relationships for the days to come. Thank you for allowing us to care for teachers, so that they can care for children. Thank you for allowing us to serve the most pained amongst us so that we can all have enough, and in advance, thank you for your cooperation as we move through the last few months of school with uncertain realities but a steadfast commitment to serve our students to the best of our ability -be it virtually or on campus.

Many of you may have heard that new restrictions permit us to serve more students.  Recently DC officials announced that schools can observe 3ft of distance instead of 6ft [2].  We are reconfiguring our plans to include this change. It is important to understand that there are still regulations and recommendations on the distance students must observe during meal times and nap time.

Next week we will provide an update on enrollment to date, intended enrollment beyond Spring Break, and summer program enrollment.

In community,

Dahlia Aguilar
Chief Schools Officer

HEALTH & SAFETY

NEW! DC Department of Health COVID-19 Surveillance Testing Update

Testing is scheduled on a weekly basis for in-person students however students may not always be tested each week. You will receive a notification directly from Curative to the email provided on the consent form when your child is tested. You do not need to do anything with the notification email. Your child’s results will be sent to the same email. There is not a defined schedule so please watch for the notifications. Results are confidential, and Mundo Verde does not receive them.

Covid-19 symptomatic and asymptomatic test consent forms in English and Spanish.

For more information on these programs click here.

NEW!

  1. Between adults and other adults

  2. Between adults and children

  3. Between children when masks are removed, such as lunch, snack time and nap.

  1. Quarantine for 14 days OR

  2. Take a COVID-19 test within 48-72 hours of return and provide negative results

FAMILY COMMUNICATIONS & ENGAGEMENT

NEW! Conversation with Parents/Caregivers of Black Students - April 19, 6:00pm

NEW! On-Campus Learning and Activities Continue Expanding

As we announced in the most recent family virtual information and dialogue sessions, Mundo Verde continues to expand access to on-campus learning opportunities. Over the last three weeks, we expanded participation in on-campus learning and activities from approximately 60 to 200 students by launching on-campus learning at our Calle Ocho campus, and adding seats at the J.F. Cook Campus. In addition, a number of 105 students participated in outdoor garden and Spanish language activities on Wednesdays at both campuses. (These activities are opt-in and space for this and future weeks are available - see below!)

Details on efforts to increase the number of students on campus were described in our most recent virtual sessions. Presentation materials and recordings of those sessions may be found here:

We continue to bring teachers back to the building and to add students as part of expanding on-campus learning this spring. If you have not yet indicated your preference for on-campus learning, please email platforms@mundoverdepcs.org for the form and for the unique identifier you will be asked to provide for each of your children. Family responses to this form are helping us plan on-campus learning for the remainder of the school year - please let us know if you didn't see it or are not sure whether you have completed it.

If you have any lingering questions, please email info@mundoverdepcs.org or calleocho@mundoverdepcs.org.

Kinder-5th Grade Personalized Learning Plans

Personalized Learning Plans were shared with families last week. Your child's plan includes personalized learning goals* as well as aligned strategies to support at home. Your child’s personalized goal(s) and strategies were developed by their teaching team based on data analysis of daily tasks/ student work, observation of students, and progress towards end of year benchmarks. All students are working towards mastery of grade level standards. When determining personalized goals, teachers consider the learner’s particular starting point on their way to mastery and the appropriate pace or structures through which the learner is to be engaged.

If you did not receive your child's plan, please contact platforms@mundoverdepcs.org. For questions regarding your child's personalized goal(s) or strategies, contact your child's teaching team.

FAMILY COMMUNICATIONS & ENGAGEMENT

UPDATED! Calle Ocho Connection, Building Our School Community - March 25, 7:00-9:15pm

All Calle Ocho families and caregivers are invited to participate with Principal Naomi Fortis-Gebreselassie in an evening that will provide space to build community with other Calle Ocho families, get the most recent updates on the expansion of on-campus learning, and plan for the remainder of the school year.

From 7:00-8:30pm we will focus on community building with a focus on re-gaining efforts for Comunidad. Then from 8:30-9:15pm we will hear reopening updates as well as have time for Q&A.

HEALTH & SAFETY

NEW! Arrival and Dismissal Updates at Calle Ocho Campus

Please remember to arrive during your designated block. As we continue to add more students, we thank you in advance for your patience in the carline.

If you need more time during arrival and dismissal to get your child out or into the car, we highly encourage you to park and walk up to help keep the traffic flowing. Teachers are always happy to talk to families, please contact them via email to set a time to talk, unfortunately, arrival and dismissal under these circumstances are not a time to talk with your teachers.

  1. Quarantine for 14 days OR

  2. Take a COVID-19 test within 48-72 hours of return and provide negative results

ATTENDANCE REMINDERS

NEW! Recommitment to Attend Learning Hubs

As we continue to expand with more hybrid in-person classes, we have noticed a significant drop in attendance in some of the Learning Hub classrooms. Learning Hubs families received an email asking them to recommitment to Learning Hubs. We are currently evaluating what Learning Hubs should remain open and which should be consolidated to potentially increase hybrid learning opportunities. We want as many students as possible to have the opportunity to return to on-campus learning if they wish.

If you are a Learning Hub family and did not receive the email, please email platforms@mundoverdepcs.org. The Recommitment Form should be submitted by Tuesday, March 23.

We Need You Support - School Attendance

We recognize how difficult these times are for every and each family. As a school we are making efforts in many fronts to support our students' learning, and to be successful we need your help. Building daily attendance expectations in the early years sets the foundation for academic success in the upper grades. We invite families and caregivers to help their child/ren get into the habit and learn the value of daily, regular attendance.

NEW! Kindergarten-5th Grade Personalized Learning Plans

On Friday, March 12 we shared your child's Personalized Learning Plan!

The personalized learning plan will be used in the ways that follow to support children and families:

  • To inform differentiated instruction and/ or small group instruction

  • To base mastery and success upon the individually met goals of each student

  • To drive student agency of their own strengths and growth areas

  • To help students and families learn strategies to address their areas of need

  • To focus on biliteracy (bilingual language and literacy development)

If you did not receive your child's plan, contact platforms@mundoverdepcs.org. For questions regarding your child's personalized goal(s) or strategies, contact your child's teaching team.

*Kindergarten - personalized literacy goal for Spanish

*1st-4th grades - personalized literacy goals for Spanish and English

MAP: 3rd, 4th, and 5th Grade

The second round of MAP assessments for 3rd, 4th and 5th grades will begin this week. Below you will find the dates for the whole group sessions.

Administering the recent MAP testing during remote learning was vastly more challenging than usual – this was especially true for our youngest students in Kinder-2nd grades. As a result and as was communicated earlier this year, we will not be implementing MAP for these grades. Instead, teachers are using classroom assessments to guide instruction and make decisions about personalizing learning.

Make sure your children have a good sleep the night before, and they attend school on time.

3rd Grade:

  • English Reading: Wednesday, March 17

  • Spanish Reading: Thursday, March 25

  • Math: Wednesday, March 24

4th Grade:

  • English Reading: Monday, March 15

  • Spanish Reading: Tuesday, March 16

  • Math: Thursday, March 18

5th Grade:
