SCHOOL MESSAGES

NEW! Expansion Message from Our Executive Director, Kristin Scotchmer

Dear Mundo Verde Families and Caregivers,

The update below addresses six key aspects of our phased reopening process important for families and caregivers interested in knowing more about how we are expanding the number of students on campus each week. (For other related and regularly updated information, please also see our reopening website page). More than 455 of our 925 PreK to 5th grade students are now participating in on-campus learning. It is exhilarating to see smiling staff and students happy to be back in our buildings interacting with peers and participating in academic work and activities to expand social/emotional competencies.

One parent/caregiver captured well the excitement and relief of being back on campus:

“After going to the building and witnessing all the preparations the operations team has put in place to make hybrid and hubs work... I am so impressed! Huge shout out to the ops team!"

I want to thank every member of our community. Collectively, we have demonstrated enormous resilience and empathy in this incredibly challenging school year.

A sign of our continued opening, we are looking forward to celebrating our 5th graders with an in-person outdoor promotion ceremony. We will share more in the coming weeks as we finalize the details, which depend on the Mayor Bowser’s orders regarding large group activities and specifically promotion and graduations.

Please read a summary of Key Aspects of our phased reopening process HERE

In community,

Kristin Scotchmer
Executive Director

Mundo Verde families have an annual tradition of organizing activities and gifts for teachers and staff across the school during Teacher Appreciation Week. We are inviting all families across both campuses to contribute to the "Teacher & Staff Appreciation Collection" that will allow parents and caregivers to recognize all teachers and staff in an equitable manner - from the classroom teacher to the front desk staff and everyone in between.

We understand that this school year has presented us all with untold challenges, and that traditions and activities have been altered and disrupted. Recognizing the unique circumstances we are all living in, and understanding that not all families may be able to participate, we want to make sure that this Teacher and Staff Appreciation Collection is an option available for those families who would like to contribute this year.

The collection will be open from April 25 through May 23. Contribuciones can be made via the PayPal link https://www.paypal.com/donate?hosted_button_id=BZTU3KGNVU7JA&source=url  or by scanning the QR code. Funds collected will be distributed among teachers and staff in both J.F. Cook and Calle Ocho

Stay tuned for more information from your classroom liaisons too. If you have any questions, please contact Classroom Liaison Coordinators: For Cook Campus Kathrin Frauscher [kfrauscher@gmail.com] and Andrew Miller [andrew@amazonwatch.org]; for Calle Ocho Campus Lindsey Elman [lindsey.elman@gmail.com] and Diego Fernandez [diegochef@gmail.com]

Earth Month - LAST DAY to Join the Food Challenge!

You can still join our team this Earth Month for the 2021 Make the Most of Food Challenge! Teams of households are tracking what, why, and how much food is discarded in a week and then take actions together that can improve nutrition, save money, and reduce waste. Small changes like composting at home and at school can make a huge difference toward mitigating the impacts of climate change. Let's make a difference together! Sign up here and indicate that you want to join the Mundo Verde team.

Contact Carissa, our Sustainability Coordinator with any questions or concerns at ctiradomarks@mundoverdepcs.org.

Sign-up for the Art in the Garden Day, Wednesday, April 28 - Calle Ocho Campus

Join us this Wednesday, April 28 for an Art in the Garden Day where we will come together to make a creative and beautiful space for students to learn and grow! You may sign up individually or per household. Fill out this form and choose to paint a beautiful and fun ground mural with Mr. Manuel or participate in garden activities with Mr. Jack. Space is limited!

For the safety of all involved, participants must register in advance. When filling out the form, indicating how many people from your household will participate. All participants must wear face masks and social distance from anyone outside of their household at all times. The paint we'll use is not washable, so dress to get messy! Contact Carissa, our Sustainability Coordinator with any questions or concerns at ctiradomarks@mundoverdepcs.org.

NEW! Opportunity To Get A Vaccine

Local Churches are setting up temporary clinics to deliver FREE COVID-19 vaccines to people with limited access. Appointments can be made via https://www.fivemedicine.com/request-an-appointment.php OR by calling the churches directly.

Covid-19 Vaccine, All DC Residents 16 Years and Older are Eligible

Since Monday, April 19, all DC residents 16 years and older are eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine. Everyone should pre-register online at vaccinate.dc.gov or call 1-855-363-0333

To review details and find the interest form, please visit the Summer Program 2021 section on our website.

To complete the interest sign up form, you will need your child’s Student Number. All families should have received an email with their child’s student number the week of April 12. The Summer School Interest Form is available here. The form will ask you to indicate whether you would like to attend in person ONLY, virtually ONLY, or virtually if there are no spaces in person. (We are finalizing potential partnerships with DPR Boost, SpringBoard, and the National Summer School Initiative).

Up to 100 slots will be made available dependent on staffing. Registration will close once that number is reached or on May 1. We may increase enrollment if there is adequate staffing.

We continue to prioritize at-risk students (citywide definition) and students with disabilities. All other students will be admitted on a first-come, first-served basis based on the order of forms received. The program will run four weeks from July 8 through August 4, and will have a cost, determined through a sliding scale. Registration is only available for the entire four week program.
