Celebrating Black History Month
Parent/Caregiver Organized Activities
Across Both Campuses

  • Reading is Resistance! Please encourage your children to participate in this reading challenge throughout the month. Classes on each campus with the greatest participation will be awarded.

  • Tuesday, February 7 at 6:30pm - Showcase of Black Health Professionals and Scientists. Last year during the Celebration of Black Health & Wellness, students interviewed health care professionals and scientists in their lives, who pushed through various forms of resistance to achieve professional success. As we honor Black Resistance this year, join us in viewing this Mundo Verde student production on February 7 at 6:30pm. Join Zoom Meeting (Meeting ID: 932 8762 4776 / Passcode: 6jLmBE)

  • February 9-14 [Calle Ocho Campus Only], Contribute a Recipe. For Black History Month, Ms. Melissa is leading her cooking class using your recipes. If you have a good recipe to contribute, please send it to Ms. Melissa via ParentSquare or email at mgurevitch@mundoverdepcs.org. Recipes must be vegetarian, egg-free, and nut-free. Can you volunteer your sous chef skills? There is still space for parents/caregivers to join in the fun. Fill out the Volunteer Form here. At the end of February, all of the recipes that are contributed will be merged into a Calle Ocho community cookbook, for us all to enjoy, so if you miss this initial deadline, it’s not too late to contribute!!

  • Saturday, February 11 at 11:00am, Black Heritage Walking Tour. Join us for a walking tour of the historic Shaw and U Street neighborhoods. In the early 20th century, these neighborhoods were the heart of DC’s Black community, and the home of Black Broadway and Black leaders in the law, sciences, and the arts. In these neighborhoods, Black Americans could thrive and find refuge against the harshness of segregation. We hope you’ll join us in learning more about this aspect of DC’s rich history. Parents/caregivers will meet at the 13th Street entrance to the U Street/ African-American Civil War Memorial/Cardozo Metro Station at 11:00am on February 11. The tour will last approximately one hour. Rain date: March 4.

  • Wednesday, February 15 at 6:30 pm, Virtual Freedom Readers Circle for Children. Parents/caregivers will host their own virtual Freedom Readers circle. They will read a frequently banned children’s book The 1619 Project: Born on the Water by Nikole Hannah-Jones and Renée Watson. After reading the book (in English and Spanish) as a group, students will be led in a discussion. This activity will include a discussion of slavery in the United States and may be less appropriate for PreK students. Join Zoom Meeting (Meeting ID: 932 8762 4776 / Passcode: 6jLmBE)

Black History Celebrations, dates TBD. Each campus will host a Black History Celebration.  Help make this event happen!Events in our community are a celebration of our spirit, gifts, and talents.  Are you interested in volunteering? This can mean helping with setting up, cleaning up, helping during the event, or contributing a favorite recipe or dish to share with the community!  Please be in touch with Skye Henry for Calle Ocho campus (skyewhenry@gmail.com), or Mary Awosika for J.F. Cook campus (mary.awosika@gmail.com).

COMMUNICATIONS, INFORMATION & QUESTIONS

NEW! Valentine’s Day No Candy

Consistent with our commitment to diversity, sustainability, and wellness, we ask families to not send your child/ren to school with candy on Tuesday, February 14.

As a school, Mundo Verde practices a commitment to embrace and celebrate social events that are aligned with our mission and priorities. Our school celebrations focus on cultural heritage and diversity, and we invite families to share their experiences. As a school, we refrain from celebrating days or traditions that may show preference of one group over another or do not align with our school policies. Hence, we do not celebrate holidays such as Valentine’s Day, Halloween, and holidays of a solely religious nature. For families who value holidays that are not observed at the school, we encourage them to continue the celebrations at home.

This content can be found in the Family Handbook on page 21 in English, and page 23 in Spanish.

Do You Need to Update Your Emergency Contact Information?

Emergencies can happen at any moment on campus, and having current emergency contact information in the school system is critical. Emergency contact information is vital to the ongoing function of campus safety whether it relates to inclement weather or medical emergencies.

Please log into Infinite Campus (student information system) and update the information on the "contact page." For health/medical conditions, please notify your campus nurse, so they may best care for them. Feel free to email Health and Safety Manager, Angeline Vergara at avergara@mundoverdepcs.org.
