NEW! SY23-24 School Calendar

We're excited to publish our school calendar for SY2023-2024 - Linked HERE. Scheduling a balanced calendar every school year is no simple task! In addition to considering our school priorities and school values, we considered aspects related to official regulations while at the same time we sought to align as much as possible to the school calendar of other organizations that are of relevance to our families and staff, including DC International School and DCI member schools. Using DCPS calendars as a base, collecting input from DCACTS, and collaborating with teachers and staff, we have developed the school calendar for the 2023-2024 school year. The main factors that define our school year schedule:

  1. First day of school

  2. Last day of school

  3. Winter break duration

  4. February break duration

NEW! Kinder - 5th Grade Student Led Conferences - Save the Date!
March 10 (All Day) & March 15 (Afternoon Only)

We are happy to announce that Student Led Conferences (SLC) are back!! SLC for SY22-2023 are taking place March 10 (all day) and March 15 (afternoon only). Student Led Conferences provide a forum in which your child has the opportunity to lead the discussion about their own progress by sharing work and reflecting on their growth.

Teachers are working with each of their students in grades Kinder - 5th, preparing them to present to their family members their progress.

We look forward to partnering with parents/caregivers to revive this treasured Mundo Verde tradition!

NEW! PreK Parent Teacher Conferences - Save the Date!
March 10 (All Day) & March 15 (Afternoon Only)

Parent-Teacher Conferences in PreK are one-on-one conferences not including students, where teachers share individualized evidence of current strengths and needs. Its purpose is to build strong home to school partnership for academic and social success; and share data on academics and social emotional learning.

Celebrating Black History Month
Parent/Caregiver Organized Activities
Across Both Campuses

  • Reading is Resistance! Please encourage your children to participate in this reading challenge throughout the month. Classes on each campus with the greatest participation will be awarded. Reading challenge forms are now available at your campus's front desk. You can also find the form here. Here’s a list of over 100 children’s books with Black lead characters that you might consider reading.

  • Wednesday, February 15 at 6:30pm, Virtual Freedom Readers Circle for Children. Parents/caregivers will host their own virtual Freedom Readers circle. They will read a frequently banned children’s book The 1619 Project: Born on the Water by Nikole Hannah-Jones and Renée Watson. After reading the book (in English and Spanish) as a group, students will be led in a discussion. This activity will include a discussion of slavery in the United States and may be less appropriate for PreK students. Join Zoom Meeting (Meeting ID: 932 8762 4776 / Passcode: 6jLmBE)

  • Black History Celebrations, March 2 (Calle Ocho Campus) and March 3 (J.F. Cook Campus) from 4:00-6:00pm. Each campus will host a Black History Celebration. Help make this event happen! Events in our community are a celebration of our spirit, gifts, and talents.  Are you interested in volunteering? This can mean helping with setting up, cleaning up, helping during the event, or contributing a favorite recipe or dish to share with the community!  Please be in touch with Skye Henry for Calle Ocho campus (skyewhenry@gmail.com), or Mary Awosika for J.F. Cook campus (mary.awosika@gmail.com).

COMMUNICATIONS, INFORMATION & QUESTIONS

NEW! Do you Know What your Child is Doing in Class?

Let us know what you know! Please be sure to take the new Possip survey by clicking here: English and Spanish.

Deadline: Monday, Feb. 13

Valentine’s Day, Feb. 14
No Candy and No Cards

Consistent with our commitment to diversity, sustainability, and wellness, we ask families to not send your child/ren to school with candy or cards on Tuesday, February 14.

Mundo Verde practices a commitment to embrace and celebrate social events that are aligned with our mission and priorities. Our school celebrations focus on cultural heritage and diversity, and we invite families to share their experiences. We look forward to continue celebrating Black History Month across both campuses with activities and challenges like Reading is resistance!, the virtual freedom readers circle for children, and the campus-wide Black History celebrations beginning of March. Please join our school community for these celebrations!

As a school, we refrain from celebrating days or traditions that may show preference of one group over another or do not align with our school policies. Hence, we do not celebrate holidays such as Valentine’s Day, Halloween, and holidays of a solely religious nature. For families who value holidays that are not observed at the school, we encourage them to continue the celebrations at home. This content can be found in the Family Handbook on page 21 in English, and page 23 in Spanish.

A Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease (also known as Coxsackie A Virus) case has been reported in PreK at Calle Ocho campus. Coxsackie disease/HFMD is characterized by fever, sores in the mouth, a skin rash with blisters, and frequently a sore throat. The sores in the mouth begin as small red spots that blister and may become ulcers. The skin rash (flat or raised red spots, some with blisters) develops on the palms of the hands and soles of the feet. The skin rash usually does not itch. To learn more, click here.
