Summer Program Family Update #3

Dear Summer Program Families,

This is our 3rd communication to you after the launching of the 2021 Summer Program on July 11!  We can share that the children are experiencing daily personalized learning. They are also enjoying outside time with friends on the school grounds and gardens!

ARRIVAL/DISMISSAL

Thank you for helping us keep your children safe by walking your Rising Kinder child to the daily entrance point and checking them in with the teachers on a daily basis. Your support of arrival and dismissal procedures has made daily summer drop-off and pick-up smooth and fluid!

NEWS FROM THE SPECIFIC GRADES

Literacy

  • Students in Rising Kindergarten are reading the books Bunny Cakes and Los Tres Chivos Vivos, both in Spanish. They are comparing the characters, setting, and sequence of events. Ask them to share with you the ingredients the character Max from Bunny Cakes puts in his recipe! Or, which goat crossed the bridge first?

  • Students in Rising 1st Grade are reading Lenny y Tulio and Lola Planta un Jardín.  As they compare the characters, settings, and sequence of events, they are also talking about Lenny’s search for friends or what plants Lola chooses to plant in her garden.

  • Students in Rising 2nd Grade are reading Joe Arco Iris and Amor de Pelo.  They are comparing characters, setting, and sequence of events, while also talking about Eloise’s love of colors and Zuri’s hair!

Math

  • Students are working on grade level math, with an emphasis on addition and subtraction and being able to identify the difference in the operations. Please feel free to work on these skills at home so we can better prepare students for the incoming school year.

Rising 3rd-6th

  • Literacy: Students in Rising 3rd-6th Grade are reading in Spanish Rising Esperanza, a story about a young girl’s journey from Mexico to the US. Ask your child what they think Esperanza may be experiencing as she makes this journey with her family.

  • Math: Students are practicing grade level math, with an emphasis on their multiplication. Please feel free to practice or quiz your students at home so they are prepared for the coming school year.

SCHOOL MEALS

Thank you to the families who have submitted the school meals form.  We ask those who have not submitted the form but want their children to receive the school lunch, to do so. This helps us provide exactly the right number of lunches and reduce food waste!

FIELD TRIP TO KENILWORTH AQUATIC GARDENS

Students will travel to the Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens by grade groups on the dates below, where they will learn and explore the biodiversity and history of the garden habitat at the Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens. In preparation for these field trips, we ask students to dress in comfortable, cool clothing and shoes for hiking. Children can also wear hats for protection from the sun. Sun lotion should be applied before the children arrive at school. Students will not be allowed to share sun lotion in an effort to avoid allergic impact.

The school buses will depart at 9:00am and return by 12:00pm in the afternoon. Students will have lunch at the gardens. Families seeking to be a chaperone on the trip with their child’s group must submit a negative Covid test by the Friday prior to the day of the field trip via email to covid19@mundoverdepcs.org. Only one chaperone per grade group will be allowed due to bus capacity. Families with a child whose medication must travel with them are especially invited to support us by joining the field trip as chaperones!
