ACADEMICS

NEW! Save the Date for PreK Expos!
Friday, December 15 Both Campuses

Celebrations of learning are more than a display of student work. These events invite students to reflect on and articulate what they have learned, how they learned, questions they answered, research they conducted, and areas of strength and struggles they experienced. They are powerful opportunities to make learning public.

These Expos often include artwork, research results from an experiment, written work, tests, or other projects. At Expo, students demonstrate more fully what has been learned, beyond just a grade on a report card. It also generates ideas for other students that will help improve their own work and to establish standards for excellent work from all students.

NEW! Enrollment Season Is Coming for Siblings of Students Enrolled at Mundo Verde!

As of December 11, siblings of students enrolled at Mundo Verde may apply with sibling preference in the common lottery on MySchoolDC.org. You will see a place on the application to indicate that a sibling is currently attending Mundo Verde. Mundo Verde attempts and has historically been able to accommodate admissions for all of our families with younger siblings, however, given the limited number of spots, preference does not guarantee entry. The deadline for applying is March 1, 2024!

Mundo Verde is recruiting families, and word of mouth has been a powerful recruitment tool. Please consider sharing this message with your networks.

NEW! Attention 5th Grade Families, It Is Time to Apply to DC International School (Middle & High School)

Rising 6th-grade students from Mundo Verde have the unique opportunity to receive transfer preference for enrollment at DCI, ensuring a seamless continuation of their inquiry-based language immersion education from 6th to 12th grade.

As of December 11, 5th graders may apply with transfer preference to DC International School (DCI) for 6th grade on the MySchoolDC.org common application.

In cases where demand exceeds available spaces, selections are determined by lottery among those with preference. This preference is only granted to families who apply by the deadline of March 1, 2024!

HEALTH & SAFETY

NEW! Ensuring Student Safety

Before winter break, both the J.F. Cook and Calle Ocho campuses will be practicing lockdown drills. Like a fire drill, a lockdown drill is undertaken so that staff can practice the protocols and make sure they are thoroughly familiar with best practices if there ever is an active shooter or imminent threat inside one of our buildings. As disheartening as it may be to even think about this, we do need to prepare for what we hope never happens. There have been instances when neighborhood violence has required us to shelter-in-place inside our schools, but we also need to plan for when intruders enter beyond our front desks and threaten our internal community.

Although the specific timing of the drills will not be announced, we do encourage parents and caregivers to talk about the drill ahead of time, providing your child/ren with context about the purpose of a drill. As a parent/caregiver, you have probably seen that absent concrete and clear information, a young child's imagination can take them to places more frightening than the actual reality. Be clear, forthright, and supportive while honoring your child's feelings and questions.

For more information, please visit the Center for Wellness in School Environments (WISE), our mental health partner, and the National Association of School Psychologists.

We recommend a jacket and head covering, and appropriate protection for hands, feet and head. When there is inclement weather we may at times opt for indoor recess. NEW! Mundo Verde Launches Its Annual Year-End Fundraising Campaign On Giving Tuesday

We are delighted to announce that this year's Fundraising Campaign will be dedicated to supporting a priority close to everyone’s hearts: Mundo Verde’s fieldwork. Thanks to the feedback provided by parents and caregivers from both campuses in last year's fundraising surveys, the school decided to direct the funds raised towards the upper academy overnight adventure trips: the Nature Bridge Camping Trip and the Puerto Rico Capstone Trip. Additionally, a part of the funds will also support the foundational fieldwork expenses of our youngest students as we know that it is those first steps out to engage with the nearby community that feed the curiosity and confidence to explore beyond what is known. If you are interested in supporting this cause, we invite you to start giving today by clicking here. Let's come together and make a difference!

OK, but WHAT is fieldwork? Fieldwork is a type of learning experience that goes beyond traditional field trips. In field trips, students are mere observers, whereas in fieldwork, they become investigators. This involves purposeful outings that are connected to the topics being studied in expeditions, and students interact with field leaders and community members to collect data. Fieldwork provides a more immersive and engaging learning experience which makes learning more enjoyable for students.

HEALTH & SAFETY

NEW! DC Health Provides Covid Test Kits to Schools Before Holiday Breaks

The District of Columbia Department of Health (DC Health) has sent a new supply of Covid take home tests and strongly recommends that families test their children before returning to school after Thanksgiving and winter holiday break, given the increased risk of transmission of respiratory illness from activities and travel.

The Covid test were sent to home with students and a limited supply will be available for pick up at the front desk.

Please ensure that your child takes their Covid tests after 5:00pm the night before returning to school. Parents and caregivers are required to report test positive results via email at covid19@mundoverdepcs.org. Mundo Verde requests students and staff who test positive for Covid to stay home and isolate themselves, especially during the first 5 days, when they are most likely infectious and contagious. Individuals exhibiting only mild or no symptoms may return to campus upon submission of a negative antigen test.

Additional information about Covid guidance is available on the DC Health website.

EVENTS & ACTIVITIES

Time to Sign Up For Parent Teacher Conferences
November 3 (All Day) & November 8 (Afternoon Only)

Teachers are sending out Parent Teacher Conference sign-ups on ParentSquare. If you have not received it yet, please contact your child’s teacher.

Mark your calendars:

  • Nov 3: Parent Teacher Conferences all day, NO SCHOOL

  • Nov 8: Parent Teacher Conferences in the afternoon / Regular School Day

In addition to testing and other assessments, parent-teacher conferences are an important way for families to hear from and discuss with teachers the strengths and weaknesses they are observing in their children – across both social-emotional and academic indicators. Especially for young learners, the development of baseline social-emotional skills are critical building blocks for academic learning. Parents/caregivers should have received student progress reports last week, and these can be discussed with their child’s teacher during their conference. Discussing student progress reports help develop strong partnerships with caregivers so that whenever possible learning at home and learning at school are aligned and supportive. Students are generally not present during these conferences.

COMMUNICATIONS, INFORMATION & QUESTIONS

NEW! Cultural Events
No Candy and No Costumes on Tuesday, October 31

Consistent with a commitment to diversity, sustainability, and wellness, we ask families to not send your child/ren to school with candy or in costume on Tuesday, October 31.

As a school, Mundo Verde practices a commitment to embrace and celebrate social events that are aligned with our mission and priorities. Our school celebrations focus on cultural heritage and diversity, and we invite families to share their experiences. As a school, we refrain from celebrating days or traditions that may show preference of one group over another or do not align with our school policies. Hence, we do not celebrate holidays such as Halloween, Valentine’s Day, and holidays of a solely religious nature. For families who value holidays that are not observed at the school, we encourage them to continue the celebrations at home.

To read more about School Traditions, visit the Family Handbook in English (page 21) or Spanish (page 23).

NEW! Fall Expeditions Launch This Week

Learning Expeditions, are a core practice of our EL Education model, are long term, in-depth studies of social studies and science content of real-world issues. Expeditions encourage students to learn to make connections, understand diverse perspectives, develop conclusions, and understand how their lives are connected to the world around them. Students learn from fieldwork experiences as well as experts and professionals in the field of study.

Mundo Verde expeditions are framed around key concepts of sustainability: the natural, social, and economic systems that comprise our complex world.

Learning expeditions culminate with celebrations of learning (known as Expos) when students show parents/caregivers, teachers, and members of the community what they learned and showcase their final student work. Expos are a great opportunity for parents and caregivers to hear from their children what has been learned more clearly than just a grade on a report card.

CBS made a special visit to our school to witness our unique sustainability and bilingual program in action!!

CBS filmed a news story examining how Mundo Verde integrates sustainability operations and education, uses expeditionary learning, and embraces social and environmental diversity so bilingual learners can experience a sense of agency now and become global stewards of our common future.

Featuring interviews with students, faculty and school leaders the piece highlights the way the school’s education for sustainability curriculum dovetails with real-time practices and expeditionary learning so that students learn in the classroom, from each other, through topical research and in-depth expeditions.

The program is scheduled to air on Monday, October 23 on CBS stations across the country. Stay tuned! Check out some behind the scenes pictures tomorrow on social media.

Additionally, Mundo Verde families are invited by the Young Concert Artists to attend a concert featuring Harmony Zhu at the Kennedy Center Terrace Theater on Wednesday, November 1 at 7:30pm.

MESSAGE

Your Health + My Health = Public Health

What we do for ourselves also helps everyone else. Here are some reminders of what you can do to keep yourself, your family, and our school community healthy.

ACADEMICS

NEW! Parent Teacher Conferences - Save the Date!
November 3 (All Day) & November 8 (Afternoon Only)

In addition to testing and other assessments, parent-teacher conferences are an important way for families to hear from and discuss with teachers the strengths and weaknesses they are observing in their children – across both social-emotional and academic indicators. Especially for young learners, the development of baseline social-emotional skills are critical building blocks for academic learning. Parents/caregivers (Kinder through 5th grade) will receive student progress reports in advance, and can be discussed with their child’s teacher during their conference. Families with PreK students will get a detailed report directly from their child’s teacher during their conference. Discussing student progress reports helps develop strong partnerships with parents and caregivers so that whenever possible learning at home and learning at school are aligned and supportive. Students are generally not present during these conferences.

Mundo Verde exercises school safety procedures to ensure that protocols are in place within school walls and also on campus; these include fire drills and lockdown drills. However, the neighborhood environment and safety require external support from MPD and District officials.

If you have questions related to neighborhood safety, please include them on this form.

We look forward to seeing many of you at the coffee to hear from and be heard by the MPD!

COMMUNICATIONS, INFORMATION & QUESTIONS

NEW! Your Opinion Matters!
Monthly Survey, October 12

To inform important decisions being made by school leaders, Mundo Verde sends a two-question survey to parents and caregivers every month. You will receive an invitation Thursday, October 12 to participate in this month’s survey.

These ‘pulse’ surveys can be answered via the web or a text message, completed in either English or Spanish, and are sent from Possip.

NEW! Dress Code and Student Belongings

Dress Code/Uniforms
All students are expected to attend school dressed in a Mundo Verde t-shirt or sweatshirt as their school uniform everyday.

Uniforms build community, show pride in one’s appearance, are economical for parents/caregivers, and lessen peer and social pressure to buy clothing that represents the latest fashion trend.

School uniforms are invaluable since we leave school grounds daily for recess and fieldwork activities because they allow teachers and volunteers to quickly identify Mundo Verde students among a larger group.

More information on Dress Code/Uniforms, can be found in the Family Handbook on page 73 in English and page 79 in Spanish.

If your family needs to purchase uniform t-shirts, please vist this website. If you have challenges in purchasing Mundo Verde uniform t-shirts, please reach out to the front desk.

Personal Devices Are Not Allowed in the School
Students should refrain from bringing personal devices (tablets, cell phones, and smartwatches) to school. If brought, students will not have access to them and must remain in book bags. The school is not responsible for loss, damage, or theft.

More information on Student Belongings, can be found in the Family Handbook on page 74 in English and page 80 in Spanish.

Thank you for supporting students to follow our school norms.

Attendance Reminders

Prompt and consistent attendance is critical to learning and success in school. While PreK is a non-compulsory grade, Mundo Verde encourages families to establish attendance habits during a child’s first years of school. Attendance policies apply to all students in PreK-5th grade, although the DC Compulsory Attendance Law only applied to grades K-5.

If your child misses large amounts of school due to health or medical concerns, please set up a meeting with your teacher to discuss your child’s needs.

Attendance in the first few weeks of school is also critical to each student’s enrollment status. DC laws considers any student between the ages of 5 and 13 to be truant when they have accrued 10 unexcused absences. Mundo Verde is required to report students who accrue 10 full-day unexcused absences to CFSA for educational neglect. Mundo Verde works to prevent truancy by identifying students at-risk of accruing a high number of unexcused absences and providing interventions using several points of engagement.

NEW! MAP Testing
September 20 to October 6

From September 20 to October 6, all students from Kinder through 5th grades will take the Measures of Academic Progress assessment (MAP). MAP is an assessment to measure their Math, English, and Spanish growth and proficiency. Our instructional staff uses this as one data point to help inform instruction for all students.
