We look forward to seeing many of you there!
During Black History Month, crew lessons and school assemblies focus on a deeper understanding of the contributions of how the United States and Latino history have been shaped by the contribution of Black people.
See details below:
J.F. Cook Campus
Over the month of February, parents/caregivers and school staff will partner to celebrate Black History Month. We have adopted the national Black History Month theme–Black Resistance. Through this theme, we will highlight resistance movements across the African Diaspora, Black leaders in those movements, and modes of expressing resistance (e.g., dance, music, poetry, and food).
Virtual Book Reading - Thursday, February 2, 6:30pm
The school will have as a guest Professor Paula Young Shelton, a high school teacher, author, and daughter of civil rights leader, Ambassador Andrew Young. She is the author of two children’s books, Child of the Civil Rights Movement and Just Like Jesse Owens. Please join us for this rare opportunity to hear a first-hand account of the civil rights movement and its heroes. Mrs. Young will be reading her book in English, and we are working to secure simultaneous Spanish interpretation. Join Zoom Meeting (Meeting ID: 932 8762 4776 / Passcode: 6jLmBE)
Reading Challenge - The month will begin with highlighting for students how reading was both an act and tool of resistance, at a time when it was illegal to teach enslaved and free Black people to read and write. Throughout the month, students are encouraged to read (alone or with an adult) as much as they can, as a small tribute to the activists (like Frederick Douglass) and educators (like John Francis Cook Sr., for whom the J.F. Cook Campus is named) who fought anti-literacy laws and their effects. Stay tuned for more information on the challenge.
Calle Ocho Campus - Show and Tell
Students are invited to bring in an item or picture that represents a Black inventor, creative, or health professional and to share it with their classmates. Classroom teachers will schedule days for children to share. There are a few ways you can help your child prepare.
Identify a person Review the lists of leaders in health and wellness, business owners, and musicians below. Visit the National Museum of African American History and Culture’s website and DC Library’s website for lots of other resources.
Keep it simple Help your child come up with no more than 3 things they’ll share about the person.
Feb 9, 6:30-8:30pm

HEALTH & SAFETY
Emergencies can happen at any moment on campus, and having current emergency contact information in the school system is critical. Emergency contact information is vital to the ongoing function of campus safety, whether it relates to inclement weather or medical emergencies.
Please log into Infinite Campus (student information system) and update the information on the "contact page." For health/medical conditions, please notify your campus nurse, so they may best care for them. Feel free to email Health and Safety Manager, Angeline Vergara at avergara@mundoverdepcs.org.
