We look forward to seeing many of you there!

Black History Month

During Black History Month, crew lessons and school assemblies focus on a deeper understanding of the contributions of how the United States and Latino history have been shaped by the contribution of Black people.

See details below:

J.F. Cook Campus
Over the month of February, parents/caregivers and school staff will partner to celebrate Black History Month. We have adopted the national Black History Month theme–Black Resistance. Through this theme, we will highlight resistance movements across the African Diaspora, Black leaders in those movements, and modes of expressing resistance (e.g., dance, music, poetry, and food).

Virtual Book Reading - Thursday, February 2, 6:30pm
The school will have as a guest Professor Paula Young Shelton, a high school teacher, author, and daughter of civil rights leader, Ambassador Andrew Young. She is the author of two children’s books, Child of the Civil Rights Movement and Just Like Jesse Owens. Please join us for this rare opportunity to hear a first-hand account of the civil rights movement and its heroes. Mrs. Young will be reading her book in English, and we are working to secure simultaneous Spanish interpretation. Join Zoom Meeting (Meeting ID: 932 8762 4776 / Passcode: 6jLmBE)

Reading Challenge - The month will begin with highlighting for students how reading was both an act and tool of resistance, at a time when it was illegal to teach enslaved and free Black people to read and write. Throughout the month, students are encouraged to read (alone or with an adult) as much as they can, as a small tribute to the activists (like Frederick Douglass) and educators (like John Francis Cook Sr., for whom the J.F. Cook Campus is named) who fought anti-literacy laws and their effects.  Stay tuned for more information on the challenge.

Calle Ocho Campus - Show and Tell
Students are invited to bring in an item or picture that represents a Black inventor, creative, or health professional and to share it with their classmates.  Classroom teachers will schedule days for children to share. There are a few ways you can help your child prepare.

  • Identify a person Review the lists of leaders in health and wellness, business owners, and musicians below. Visit the National Museum of African American History and Culture’s website and DC Library’s website for lots of other resources.

  • Keep it simple Help your child come up with no more than 3 things they’ll share about the person.

COMMUNICATIONS, INFORMATION & QUESTIONS

School Closures and Delays Due to Inclement Weather

Mundo Verde follows D.C. Public Schools’ (DCPS) decision regarding changes in the school schedule due to inclement weather. In the event of a delayed opening, the before school program is canceled. In the event of early dismissal, the after school program is canceled. In some cases the school reserves the right to make a different decision than the one made by DCPS if necessary.

Information about school closures and delays are available through:

  • Text Message & Email: A text message and/or an email is sent to families and staff when a closing or delay is decided (the night before or the morning of)

  • School Website: A note on the school website top announcement bar

  • Radio Station: WTOP (1500 AM, 107.7 FM)

  • Television: WJLA News Channel 7

  • School Social Media: Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram

This content can be found in the Family Handbook on page 66 in English, and page 71 in Spanish.

Family Handbook

Premised on the foundational concept of crew, that none of us are passengers along for the ride, but rather all active participants, the Family Handbook explains in detail the school rules, norms, protocols and procedures. In English y Spanish, it speaks to our collaborative vision for learning; teachers, students, and parents/caregivers, all working together as a synchronized crew to support students to grow more than they think possible.

As members of the Mundo Verde community, we all strive to embody the characteristics of Community Stewardship by practicing six community-building values and virtues in our everyday operation (known by the acronym ESPICA). We understand that we matter; our actions, attitudes and priorities today will leave an imprint on generations to come. We are charged with caring for the world around us so as not to sacrifice the needs of others in the present or those in the future.

Please note the content highlighted in gray indicates activities, celebrations, services, and others that were impacted by the pandemic and that for SY22-23 may continue to be adjusted due to residual impact during recovery.

Student Care - Sick Students Should Stay Home

In order to maintain a healthy school, parents/caregivers should not send their children to school with any contagious diseases such as the flu, strep throat, chickenpox, measles, conjunctivitis (pink eye), ringworm, or scabies. Students with any of these conditions will be sent home from school until they are no longer contagious. Parents/caregivers must pick up their child within two hours of being notified that their child is sick with a contagious illness. Please follow the following guidelines:

  • If the student is not feeling well in the morning, particularly if he or she has a fever of 100 degrees or more, do not send him or her to school.

  • Parents/caregivers should not send their children to school within 24 hours of vomiting or running a fever of 100 degrees or higher.

  • Students should not return to school until 24 – 36 hours after beginning the course of antibiotics.

  • If parents/caregivers believe that the student has a communicable disease, we encourage them to visit a Doctor's office, clinic, health center or ER.

  • If parents/caregivers have questions about what illnesses qualify as communicable diseases (please see the list here).

  • If the student is diagnosed and/or treated for a communicable disease, please inform the school and provide the nurse/medically trained staff with any necessary documentation at cookhealth@mundoverdepcs.org and cookattendance@mundoverdepcs.org (for J.F. Cook campus), or c8health@mundoverdepcs.org and c8attendance@mundoverdepcs.org (for Calle Ocho campus) and / or in person. The school will request documentation that the student is cleared to return to school both for their safety and the safety of other students and staff in order for them to return to school.

Keeping Our School Community Healthy

Everyday Preventive Actions Can Help Fight Germs Like Flu

CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) recommends some strategies to fight the flu:

  • Get the flu vaccine

  • Take everyday preventive actions (avoid close contact with people who are sick, wash your hands often with soap, avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth, clean and disinfect surfaces and objects that may be contaminated with germs)

  • If you get sick with the flu, get an early treatment

To learn more about how does flu spread, what are other everyday preventive actions, what steps you can take to help stop the spread of germs, and what you can do to protect your child, please check out these brochures from the CDC website English / Spanish.

More Celebrations of Learning Coming Up!

Celebrations of learning are more than a display of student work. The events compel students to reflect on and articulate what they have learned, how they learned, questions they answered, research they conducted, and areas of strength and struggles. They are powerful opportunities to make learning public.

The Expo may include artwork, research results from an experiment, written work, tests, or other projects. At Expo students demonstrate what has been learned more clearly than just a grade on a report card can. It also gives other students ideas that will help them improve their own work and helps to set a standard for excellent work from all students.

Please find below the date and time of your child's Expo:

COMMUNICATIONS, INFORMATION & QUESTIONS

NEW!

NEW!

HEALTH & SAFETY

New Year’s Health and Safety Measures: Covid Tests and Masking

With an abundance of caution as staff and families return to campus from winter break and travel, Mundo Verde is requiring negative Covid tests and masking for the first two weeks in January. Both of these required policies will apply to ALL staff and students.  More details on Covid tests below.

Test for Covid Prior to Returning to Campus by January 2, 5:00pm

Following the SY22-23 Covid Policy (English / Spanish), Mundo Verde has provided Covid rapid antigen tests to students to ensure that as many individuals as possible return to campus with negative results. Please submit your child’s test results by completing the following form by 5:00pm on Monday, Jan 2. Testing should be done 24 hours prior to returning to school. Please clearly write the student's name and the date the test was completed on the test itself.

The forms are currently closed and they will be accessible starting on Jan 2, 2023 in the same link.

J.F. Cook Campus: https://mundoverde.tfaforms.net/329

Calle Ocho Campus: https://mundoverde.tfaforms.net/330

Individuals who do not submit a Covid test result on time will not be allowed to enter the campus until a Covid test result is submitted and reviewed by the Covid team. Tests will be available onsite for parents/caregivers to administer to their children before they enter the building.

To read more about Student Care, visit page 58 on the Family Handbook in English (page 61 for Spanish). The Family Handbook is also located in the Families Portal (password: crew) on the school website.

As Our Weather Changes, Make Sure Your Children are Ready for Outdoor Recess!

As we begin to experience fluctuating temperatures, please prepare your children with the appropriate gear - especially for days when there is a chill in the air. We go outside when it is cold! We recommend a jacket and head covering, and appropriate protection for hands, feet and head. When there is inclement weather we may at times opt for indoor recess. If you need any assistance providing these items for your family, please contact the front desk of your campus.

NEW! Annual Cross-Campus Teacher and Staff Appreciation Collection Update

The 2022 Holiday Teacher and Staff Appreciation Collection has ended and the caregiver organizations at J.F. Cook and Calle Ocho campuses are pleased to share the results with you all!

Thanks to the overwhelming generosity of Mundo Verde parents and caregivers, a total of $37,010 was collected, which exceeded the collection goal of $33,000! Funds were distributed this week to all 250 employees in the form of fee-less Amex electronic gift cards. Each full-time staff member received a gift card worth $165 and each part-time staff member received $85.

Participation in the collection was optional and dependent on each family’s financial circumstances. Regardless of whether you’ve chosen to express your appreciation by contributing to the fund or in another way this year, caregiver organizations at J.F. Cook and Calle Ocho campuses are immensely grateful for the outpouring of support and participation. It is wonderful to be able to recognize the amazing teachers and staff at Mundo Verde this holiday season. Thank you!

These events invite students to reflect on and articulate what they have learned, how they learned, questions they answered, research they conducted, and areas of strength and struggles they experienced. They are powerful opportunities to make learning public.

These Expos often include artwork, research results from an experiment, written work, tests, or other projects. At Expo, students demonstrate more fully what has been learned, beyond just a grade on a report card. It also generates ideas for other students that will help improve their own work and to establish standards for excellent work from all students.

NEW! Admissions Season Is Coming!

EdFEST 2022 will take place virtually from 10:00am-1:00pm on Dec. 10, 2022. During EdFEST, parents and caregivers will be able to explore the city’s public and public charter school options (PK3 – Grade 12), chat directly with school representatives and learn about the public school lottery – all from your device. With the launch of the common application and common lottery on Dec. 12, 2022 for the 2023-24 school year, EdFEST is a timely event to help families make informed choices. For more details and registration, click here.

Siblings of Students Enrolled at Mundo Verde
As of December 12, siblings of students enrolled at Mundo Verde may apply with sibling preference in the common lottery on MySchoolDC.org. There is a place on the application to indicate that a sibling is currently attending Mundo Verde. Mundo Verde attempts and has historically been able to accommodate admissions for all of our families with younger siblings, however, given the limited number of spots, preference does not guarantee entry. The deadline for applying is March 1, 2023!

Mundo Verde is recruiting families, and word of mouth has been a powerful recruitment tool. Please consider sharing this message with your networks.

Attention 5th Grade Families - Applying to DC International School
As of December 12, fifth graders may apply with transfer preference to DC International School (DCI) for 6th grade on the MySchoolDC.org common application. OJO - this preference is only granted to families who apply by the deadline of March 1, 2023!

COMMUNICATIONS, INFORMATION & QUESTIONS

NEW! Equitable Access to Mundo Verde

Guided by its mission, Mundo Verde aims to foster high levels of academic achievement among a diverse group of students by offering equitable access for DC students to its educational program. The equitable access preference is an optional preference schools in the District of Columbia may offer during the application lottery process. After seeking feedback from stakeholders and a robust Board discussion and vote of approval, Mundo Verde applied and was approved for the equitable access preference in August 2022 for the 2023-2024 school year. A task force was created to guide the implementation of the preference. From the beginning of this process, Mundo Verde school leaders have been attuned to the additional resources and complexity of implementing an equitable access preference. To read more about where our school is on this process and for an overview of the application and implementation process, click here.

HEALTH & SAFETY

NEW!

NEW!

  • If parents/caregivers believe that the student has a communicable disease, we encourage them to visit a Doctor's office, clinic, ER or health center.

To read more about Student Care, visit page 58 on the Family Handbook in English (page 61 for Spanish). The Family Handbook is also located in the Families Portal (password: crew) on the school website.

Mark your calendar:

  • Nov 9: Parent Teacher Conferences in the afternoon / Regular School Day

  • Nov 10: Parent Teacher Conferences all day, NO SCHOOL

In addition to testing and other assessments, parent-teacher conferences are an important way for families to hear from and discuss with teachers the strengths and weaknesses they are observing in their children – across both social-emotional and academic indicators. Especially for young learners, the development of baseline social-emotional skills are critical building blocks for academic learning. Parents/caregivers should have received student progress reports last week, and these can be discussed with their child’s teacher during their conference. Discussing student progress reports help develop strong partnerships with caregivers so that whenever possible learning at home and learning at school are aligned and supportive. Students are generally not present during these conferences.

COMMUNICATIONS, INFORMATION & QUESTIONS

Halloween No Candy and No Costumes

Consistent with a commitment to diversity, sustainability and wellness, we ask families to not send your child/ren to school with candy or in costume on Monday, October 31.

As a school, Mundo Verde practices a commitment to embrace and celebrate social events that are aligned with our mission and priorities. As a school we refrain from celebrating days or traditions that may show preference of one group over another or do not align with our school policies. Hence, we do not celebrate holidays such as Halloween, Valentine’s Day, and holidays of a solely religious nature. For families who value holidays that are not observed at the school, we encourage them to continue the celebrations at home.

ACADEMICS

NEW! Fall Expeditions Launch This Week

Learning Expeditions, are a core practice of the EL Education model, are long term, in-depth studies of social studies and science content of real-world issues. Through expeditions, students produce high-quality work that is shared with families, teachers, and peers, and also with the larger community. Every grade level conducts two expeditions per school year, each lasting ten to twelve weeks. Mundo Verde expeditions are framed around key concepts of sustainability: the natural, social, and economic systems that comprise our complex world.

If you want to learn more about your child’s expeditions, contact their teacher using ParentSquare!

Parent Teacher Conferences
November 9 and 10

In addition to testing and other assessments, parent-teacher conferences are an important way for families to hear from and discuss with teachers the strengths and weaknesses they are observing in their children – across both social-emotional and academic indicators. Especially for young learners, the development of baseline social-emotional skills are critical building blocks for academic learning. Parents/caregivers (kinder through 5th grade) will receive student progress reports in advance, and can be discussed with their child’s teacher during their conference. Families with PreK students will get a detailed report directly from their child’s teacher during their conference. Discussing student progress reports help develop strong partnerships with caregivers so that whenever possible learning at home and learning at school are aligned and supportive. Students are generally not present during these conferences.

SCHOOL SERVICES

NEW! Mundo Verde Services Payments Reminders

We have heard a number of questions about when and how parents should pay for school services. Unfortunately, services have different payment mechanisms in the Infinite Campus portal.

ALL Families that don’t qualify for FARM: Daily snacks should be paid for monthly through the portal's fees

Students participating in school lunch: Families should prepay for lunch by adding money to their child's food services account. OJO: If your account is showing a negative balance, you add funds to your food services account. Click here for instructions on how to add money to your account. Spanish here.

Students participating in the Extended Day Program: Program fees should be paid monthly, through the parent's portal - school store. Click here for instructions on how to add money to your account. Spanish here.

Once you add all of the required fees to your cart, you can pay all of your fees in one single transaction.

For questions about how to add money, fees, and payments, email Rocio Yoc, Senior Business Manager at invoice@mundoverdepcs.org.

COMMUNICATIONS, INFORMATION & QUESTIONS

NEW! Enhancing School-Families Communications

It is exciting to announce we are starting to use ParentSquare as the new platform for communications between the school and parents/caregivers! ParentSquare provides a simple and safe way for everyone at school to connect. Check your ParentSquare account and see if you received this Family Update Issue #8. Let the school know your account is working, and ‘appreciate’ the post by clicking the heart icon.

If you have not activated your ParentSquare account, please do so using this QR code.

Click here to read everything you need to know to GET STARTED WITH PARENTSQUARE (English / Spanish) from activating your account to training resources, tips, and support.

Our team wants to acknowledge that while everyone (teachers, staff, parents, caregivers) is likely eager to use ParentSquare, we will also all be learning how to use it. Teachers and families received access to the system last week and the team is testing the system for the next two weeks as part of Phase I.

NEW! Spanish and English Academic Volunteers

Volunteer parents and caregivers are crucial collaborators in creating and maintaining a school community that is welcoming, diverse, and inclusive of all; and serve as catalysts for the success not only of their child, but of each and every student in the school, and with this, the success of our school as a whole!

This year, we are excited to open our classrooms to receive support from volunteer Spanish/English Academic Helpers! Academic Helpers are volunteer parents/caregivers that support students during the Personalized Learning Time (PLT) block.

If you are interested, please fill out this form. Feel free to reach out to your campus principal with any questions.

Note: Criteria and eligibility details are being finalized and will be shared soon.

COMMUNICATIONS, INFORMATION & QUESTIONS

Classroom Liaisons and WhatsApp

Mundo Verde is happy to see so many families utilizing and expanding the WhatsApp framework that the school created in SY21-22. Many parents and caregivers have also volunteered to serve as classroom liaisons, and they have been hard at work updating WhatsApp groups for the new school year. (Learn more about classroom liaisons below.)

We encourage everyone who continues to use WhatsApp to follow the initial guidelines that can be found here. Classroom liaison and corresponding WhatsApp groups for each campus can be found at these links:

Classroom Liaisons are volunteer caregivers that support their child’s classroom by creating and maintaining community connections between fellow caregivers and classroom teachers; by creating a welcoming and inclusive environment; and embodying the spirit of crew (all Mundo Verde community members working actively together toward shared goals).

To further enhance family-to-family communications on both campuses, as well as communication with the school, we also ask all families to keep an eye out for a forthcoming invitation to join the new ParentSquare communications platform. As the new platform to center communications between the school and families, ParentSquare will be maintained by the school’s communications team.

Correction on Covid-19 Policy

We want to clarify that Asymptomatic Testing is happening during the first month of classes at the school for all students except those whose parents submitted waivers to skip testing. After one month of school, Mundo Verde’s Health and Safety team will provide random antigen tests, not PCR tests as it was stated in the Covid-19 policy.

Please see the Covid-19 Policy here in English and Spanish.

Asymptomatic Testing - To ensure we start the 2022-23 school year as safe as possible, Mundo Verde will test students weekly asymptomatic testing for the first month unless parents submit waivers to skip testing. After one month of school, Mundo Verde’s Health and Safety team will provide random antigen tests in a tiered strategy as follows:

  1. Low community spread - no weekly testing

  2. Medium community spread - 10% student and staff testing

  3. High community spread - 20% student and staff testing

Reminders for Arrival & Dismissal

Students are more engaged and productive when they start and end their day confident that they are known well by others in the community and that they have a clear understanding of what the community expects from them. Arrival and dismissal routines help establish these two points of reference for their school days.

Please review the Arrival and Dismissal Procedures document. This is a key resource for parents and caregivers, especially for the first few weeks of school. It includes arrival and car line procedures, arrival and dismissal times, recommendations for drivers, pedestrians, and bikers, and dismissal locations and procedures:

Arrival & Dismissal Reminders:

  • Students are only released to authorized pickups

  • Authorized pickups should be prepared to present photo ID

  • School day starts at 8:30am, and the day ends at 3:30pm

  • The car line is open only for arrival time

  • Continue parking a few blocks from the campus

  • Avoid using alleys to exit the neighborhood

ACADEMICS

Attendance Reminders

Prompt and consistent attendance is critical to learning and success in school. While PreK is a non-compulsory grade, Mundo Verde encourages families to establish attendance habits during a child’s first years of school. Attendance policies apply to all students in PreK-5th grade, although the DC Compulsory Attendance Law only applied to grades K-5.

If your child misses large amounts of school due to health or medical concerns, please set up a meeting with your teacher to discuss your child’s needs.

Attendance in the first few weeks of school is also critical to each student’s enrollment status. DC laws considers any student between the ages of 5 and 13 to be truant when they have accrued 10 unexcused absences. Mundo Verde is required to report students who accrue 10 full-day unexcused absences to CFSA for educational neglect.  Mundo Verde works to prevent truancy by identifying students at-risk of accruing a high number of unexcused absences and providing interventions using several points of engagement.

For more information, please review the “Attendance and Truancy” section in the Family Handbook in English, page 64 or Spanish, page 68.

New Attendance Email Addresses for Each Campus

If you know your child will be late, be absent, leave the school early, or there are changes with pick-up, email your campus using the dedicated email address.

Each campus now has its own email address. We ask that you begin to send attendance emails to the following campus addresses:

Please note the attendance@mundoverdepcs.org email address does not longer exist.

EVENTS & ACTIVITIES

Back to School Night - Mark Your Calendars!
Students Are Invited!

After two years of virtual back to school nights, we are all looking forward to welcoming you in person! Mundo Verde is committed to leveraging every opportunity the school year brings to create spaces to strengthen a sense of belonging and build community among students, families and staff. It is in that spirit that we are adding a new element to back to school nights: we are inviting students to join parents and caregivers as they visit their classroom, allowing with this an opportunity for them to participate with you as you meet other families in the class, meet teachers and get to hear more about the school day and how to engage in the academic life of your child.

Join us as we celebrate the start of the year and take advantage of the opportunity Back to School Night offers parents and teachers to connect and collaborate in support of the academic and social-emotional success of the students.

In order to accommodate families in person, Back to School Night sessions are staggered by campus and by grade. Look carefully at the schedule below and identify your blocks so you can mark your calendars. COMMUNICATIONS, INFORMATION & QUESTIONS

NEW! Tell Us What You Are Thinking!

To enhance community dialogue and as one means of informing school decision-making, Mundo Verde sends every family a monthly survey with one or two short questions. These questions can be answered via the web or a text message, and in either English or Spanish.  The survey also offers parents and caregivers a chance to share thoughts and ask questions. Please use this opportunity to tell us your thoughts and ideas and raise questions that may be on your mind. The surveys are sent through Possip, and unless you choose to share your name, all responses are anonymized.

Deadline to share your thoughts is Monday 9/12!!

Click here now to have your voice heard:  English | Spanish

We do ask, please, that questions that are very specifically about an issue related to your child/ren’s day at school (about a meal, an assignment, a late arrival, and so forth) please be addressed directly to the appropriate member of the staff. To see who best to contact with topical question, please visit the Who to go for What in English or Spanish.

NEW! Classroom Liaisons and WhatsApp

Classroom Liaisons are volunteer caregivers that support their child’s classroom by creating and maintaining community connections between fellow caregivers and classroom teachers; by creating a welcoming and inclusive environment; and by embodying the spirit of crew (all Mundo Verde community members working actively together toward shared goals).

HEALTH & SAFETY

NEW! Covid-19 Test to Return After School Breaks and Holidays

Test to Return is designed to reach entire school populations after vacations and school breaks, when travel and gatherings (and thus potential exposure to Covid-19) may be more likely. Both, vaccinated and unvaccinated students are expected to participate. All families are encouraged to submit a test result to the Rapid Test Submission Portal before returning to school after a break or holiday. Students are encouraged to use the test kit previously distributed by the school.

Any positive Covid-19 test result should be immediately reported to covid19@mundoverdepcs.org, where a member of our Health and Safety team will make contact to provide you with information on the isolation process. All questions regarding Covid-19 and our current campus policies should be directed to covid19@mundoverdepcs.org, where a member of our trained Health and Safety team will support your needs.

NEW! Correction on Covid-19 Policy

We want to clarify that Asymptomatic Testing is happening during the first month of classes at the school for all students except those whose parents submited waivers to skip testing. After one month of school, Mundo Verde’s Health and Safety team will provide random antigen tests not PCR tests as it was stated in the Covid-19 policy.

SCHOOL SERVICES

Important Updates About Purchasing Uniforms

In order to better manage inventory, and ensure that our front desk team is fully available to support families and school staff with immediate needs, beginning this week, we will be transitioning t-shirt uniform sales to be exclusively available through the online store via Infinite Campus. As we are consolidating the majority of our inventory in the warehouse, T-shirt sales will no longer be available for purchase at the front desk.

We will continue to pair important school events with free shirt opportunities (e.g. Teacher Parent conferences). Families that are having trouble with the online store or that have a financial hardship should still feel free to request support from the front desk team!
