MESSAGE
Since we opened our doors almost twelve years ago, celebrating the natural environment -- and sustainability more broadly -- has always included not just global issues but also the issue of importance to our local community. This year, we have adjusted the timing of the celebrations. Rather than scheduling large celebrations after school, we are embedding activities such as making trash art and planting seeds within the instructional day. In this way students whose parents/caregivers may not be able to join us in the middle of the afternoon can fully participate. Preparing for Earth Day has also always been a time when parents/caregivers, students, and staff all work together collaboratively. To those busy parents and caregivers who have volunteered this year, our heartfelt thank you for all that you have done and are doing. The gift of time that you have given to the community is seen and deeply appreciated; and to all the staff who have devoted significant time to make Earth Day a month-long educational celebration at Mundo Verde, please know that you too are seen and appreciated.
Please consider supporting as a volunteer. To check the schedule for when each class is participating in the activities, please see the following links:

ACADEMICS
Deadline for Returning Students: May 5
Deadline for New Students: May 1
On March 31, all families should have received an email with re-enrollment instructions. Once you receive it, make sure you complete all of the necessary paperwork. For a list of acceptable documentation as Proof of DC Residency click here (English / Spanish). Please note that current students seeking re-enrollment DO NOT have to go through MySchoolDC. Siblings of current students accepted for a new space will be able to be included in the same re-enrollment form as long as they have been matched to Mundo Verde through MySchoolDC.
Reenrollment Deadlines:
RETURNING students - May 5
NEW students - May 1
Note on Siblings of Current Students: While it is possible for a sibling of a current student to not be matched in the initial round, we certainly expect all siblings to receive an offer by the end of June.
For more information, visit the Returning Students section on the website.
April 10-14
Mundo Verde will be celebrating sustainability week from April 10-14. During this week, Teatro de la Luna will bring environmental-themed plays for students to enjoy at each campus (April 12 at Calle Ocho and April 13 at J.F. Cook), celebrate We Love Earth Spirit Week, make Earth Day pledges, go on nature-related field trips, write letters to representatives, create art, and a lot more! We look forward to our students celebrating sustainability during their instructional day.
EVENTS & ACTIVITIES
“School Climate and Culture”
April 7, 9:00-10:00am
Parents and caregivers are invited to join Principal Jenn for her Coffee with the Principal on April 7 from 9:00-10:00am.
Please submit your questions in advance! For this session, Principal Jenn will focus on school climate and culture. If you have questions related to this topic, please submit them using this form: Questions for Coffee with the Principal Jenn
We look forward to seeing many of you there!
“Neighborhood Safety”
April 14, 9:00-10:00am
Submit Your Questions by April 6 here
Parents and caregivers are invited to join Principal Netta for her Coffee with the Principal on April 14 from 9:00-10:00am.
Please submit your questions in advance! For this session, Principal Netta will have a special guest, Commander James M. Boteler, to talk about the neighborhood safety concerns. Commander Boteler oversees the eight Police Service Areas in the Third District, near the center of the city.
Mundo Verde exercises school safety procedures to ensure that protocols are in place within school walls and also on campus; these include fire drills and lock down drills. However, the neighborhood environment and safety requires external support from MPD and District officials. On April 14, J.F. Cook parents/caregivers will have a special opportunity to discuss neighborhood safety concerns to MPD (Metropolitan Police Department).
**OJO** Please submit your questions related to neighborhood safety in advance by using this form by April 6: Questions for Coffee with Principal Netta
We look forward to seeing many of you there!
COMMUNICATIONS, INFORMATION & QUESTIONS
Together, thousands of books were read and all students who participated will receive a certificate of achievement. We are happy to announce the two winner classes who read the most books on their respective campuses, the Orchids class from Calle Ocho and the Zorros class from J.F. Cook! Each class will receive a classroom party. Additionally, participating students were placed into a grade-level drawing to receive a gift card to a local retailer. Drawing winners will be contacted directly.
You can find the Calle Ocho Campus Growth webpage on the school website. On this webpage you will find weekly updates on the Calle Ocho growth. From meetings and neighborhood agreements, DC PCSB approvals, presentation of the plans, to design and building advancements.
On March 20, DC Public Charter School Board unanimously voted to approve Mundo Verde’s Facility Charter Amendment to operate a building at 817 Varnum St NE. Click here for the meeting agenda, recording, and materials.

Following the school safety policy, we will be conducting a state mandated Shelter-In-Place Drill at Calle Ocho Campus this week, any day between April 3-7.
These drills are designed to educate students on the process of a shelter-in-place and engage them in discussion as well as receive feedback from staff about the options that could be used in this type of scenario.
