ACADEMICS

OJO! LAST 3 DAYS to Apply for Siblings of Students Enrolled at Mundo Verde
Deadline March 1, 2023

Siblings of students enrolled at Mundo Verde may apply with sibling preference through the common lottery: MySchoolDC.org. Mundo Verde has generally been able to accommodate admissions for all of our students with younger siblings, but sibling preference does not guarantee entry. The application deadline is March 1, 2023.

Make sure to indicate on the application that your child is a sibling of a current student attending Mundo Verde.

There is a place on the application to indicate that a sibling is currently attending Mundo Verde.

OJO! LAST 3 DAYS for 5th Grade Families Applying to DC International School
Deadline March 1, 2023

Fifth graders may apply with transfer preference to DC International School (DCI) for 6th grade on the MySchoolDC.org common application.

OJO! This preference is only granted to families who apply by the deadline of March 1, 2023!

Kinder - 5th Grade Student Led Conferences
March 10 (All Day) & March 15 (Afternoon Only)

Student Led Conferences (SLC) are back!! SLC for SY22-2023 are taking place March 10 (all day) and March 15 (afternoon only). Student Led Conferences provide a forum in which your child has the opportunity to lead the discussion about their own progress by sharing work and reflecting on their growth.

We look forward to partnering with parents/caregivers to revive this treasured Mundo Verde tradition!

PreK Parent Teacher Conferences
March 10 (All Day) & March 15 (Afternoon Only)

Parent-Teacher Conferences in PreK are one-on-one conferences not including students, where teachers share individualized evidence of current strengths and needs. Its purpose is to build strong home to school partnership for academic and social success; and share data on academics and social emotional learning.

EVENTS & ACTIVITIES

Celebrating Black History Month
Parent/Caregiver Organized Activities
Across Both Campuses

  • March 2 from 4:00-6:00pm - Calle Ocho Campus Black History Celebration Each campus will host a Black History Celebration. Help make this event happen!

    • As part of this celebration, Calle Ocho is organizing the “Arroz con Amigos” event, a celebration of rice dishes throughout the African Diaspora. We are looking for caregivers and staff to share a beloved dish at this educational potluck (For example, arroz con gandules, jollof rice, and jambalaya). Please plan to bring your dish and attend in order to share samples with guests. To register, please complete this form

    • Join us in celebrating this year’s Black History Month theme of Black Resistance through performances, art activities, book readings, food and more. If you want to volunteer, please contact Skye Henry (skyewhenry@gmail.com).

  • March 3 from 4:00-6:00pm - J.F. Cook Campus Black History Celebration. Each campus will host a Black History Celebration. Help make this event happen! Join us in celebrating this year’s Black History Month theme of Black Resistance through performances, art activities, book readings, food and more. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Mary Awosika (mary.awosika@gmail.com).

  • March 4, from 11:00am-12:00pm - Black Heritage Walking Tour in Shaw. Earlier this month, families and staff from both campuses enjoyed a walking tour of U Street, once known as Black Broadway.  We’re excited to tour the adjacent Shaw neighborhood this Saturday. In the early 20th century, Shaw was at the heart of DC’s Black community, and the home of Black leaders, including Carter G. Woodson, the founder of Black History Month. We hope you’ll join us in learning more about this aspect of DC’s rich history. We’ll meet at the Shaw-Howard University Metro Station. The tour will be led by Shaw Main Streets’ Executive Director Alex Padro.

  • Reading is Resistance! Please encourage your children to participate in this reading challenge throughout the month. Classes on each campus with the greatest participation will be awarded. Reading challenge forms are now available at your campus's front desk. You can also find the form here. Here’s a list of over 100 children’s books with Black lead characters that you might consider reading.

Biliteracy Week and Spanish Book Fair
Sign Up For Volunteer Opportunities!
March 13-17

Mundo Verde is excited to celebrate the love for reading and have the Spanish Book Fair back!!

During our Biliteracy Week, students will have different opportunities to celebrate their love for literature with a week filled with books, storytelling, favorite characters, and more. The Biliteracy Week will be centered on the guiding question: What ESPICA values can you find in your favorite book characters or stories?

The Spanish Book fair returns to Mundo Verde from March 15-17! Stop by the Zocalo, browse and purchase from a large selection of titles, all in Spanish. Our goal is to foster love for Spanish in our school community; introduce books that otherwise would be difficult to find; address language inequity and, as possible, add to the wonderful titles in Spanish in our classroom libraries.

The book fair is staffed entirely by Mundo Verde families. WE NEED YOU TO MAKE THIS A SUCCESS! Please sign up HERE if you can help with book sorting, book display, cashier at register, or other.

Reminder for PreK Families - Sending Extra Clothes For Accidents

Help us keep our students comfortable. All PreK students should have extra clothes in case of any accidents. Please make sure your child/ren has brought a spare change to school. If you are unsure, contact your child’s teacher. The school also has loaner clothes to use as backup when needed. If your child brings home used clothes, please make sure to wash them and return them to school, especially when they are loaner items (excluding socks and underwear).

Covid Testing Prior to Returning to Campus After Mid-Winter Break

Following the SY22-23 Covid Policy (English / Spanish), students must conduct Covid-19 rapid antigen tests prior to returning to school to ensure that as many students as possible return to campus after our mid-winter break with negative results.

Parents/caregivers should submit your child’s test results by 5:00pm TODAY Sunday, February 26. Complete the health form below:

The student's name and the date the test was completed need to be written on the test itself.

**Testing should be done within 24 hours prior to returning to school**

Individuals who do not submit a Covid test result on time will not be allowed to enter the campus until a Covid test result is submitted and reviewed by the Covid team. A limited amount of Covid tests will be available onsite for parents/caregivers to administer to their children before they enter the building tomorrow Monday, Feb. 27.
