The Celebrations of learning have been scheduled for February and March. You will receive the specific date for your grade directly from your child’s teacher.

Celebrations of learning are more than a display of student work and more than a party at the end of the year. These events invite students to reflect on and articulate key aspects of learning: what they have learned, how they learned, questions they answered, research they conducted, and areas of strength and struggles they experienced. They are powerful opportunities to demonstrate publicly their learning at Mundo Verde.

Rapid Test for PreK and Kinder Families Continues Available

This is only available to PreK and Kinder from the city given the availability of vaccinations for these age groups. Tests are distributed to students every other Friday for the next two weeks.

Rapid test results should be submitted through this reporting portal. The link goes live today on Sunday mornings at 6:00am and remains open until Tuesdays at 5:00pm. Parents should administer test to their children on Sundays, report all results (negative and positive), and notify the school directly of a positive test result if necessary.

City Covid-19 Testing Initiatives

Last week to register for the PreK Program! Deadline -Feb. 5

The PreK 3-4 program supports asymptomatic testing of younger students and is free for eligible students in collaboration with OSSE and DC DOH. This program complements but does not replace testing in schools. Even if your child has been registered for the mail-to-home test program, PreK 3 and 4 students should continue to participate in saliva-based symptomatic testing if they develop symptoms, and asymptomatic testing on their campus. Registration for a test kit is done using this form for PreK 3-4. To receive these mailed-to-home tests please register before Feb. 5, 2022. PreK families that register can expect to receive a test kit about once a month. To read more details click here.

Program for confirmed close contacts of a positive Covid-19 case

Close contacts may request up to two test kits, containing one PCR test each. You may register using this form for close contacts , please fill out a separate form for each kit you request. Click here to see the instructions in English or Spanish.

Has Your Child Tested Positive for Covid-19?

If your child has tested positive for Covid-19 in the last 90 days and you have not notified us, please provide proof of the previous positive test to covid19@mundoverdepcs.org and tell us when you believe symptoms may have started. As for all positive cases, individuals should complete 10 days of isolation and not take PCR testing for the 90 days after testing positive.

REMINDER! Dismissal Bus Lane at Calle Ocho

A friendly reminder that carline is used for bus pick up only in the afternoon and is not open to parking during dismissal. Families are welcome to continue to use the carline in the morning for drop off.

NEW! Additional Second Grade Extended Day Class at Calle Ocho Campus

In February, we will open another second grade class in extended day - 2B at Calle Ocho Campus. Families who are invited to join the program will have the opportunity to start between Feb 14 - Mar 1. Please be on the lookout for an invitation if you are a family at Calle Ocho in 2nd Grade!

The February Prorated Sliding Scale is now available HERE. Regarding January payments, while we do not normally reimburse absences in our program, we are however reimbursing families this month if their children were not able to participate in our program due to lengthy quarantines and transitions to virtual learning. We are also adjusting monthly fees for families who recently joined the program to reflect their start date.

We are happy to introduce our new clinician from our partners at AprilMay, Earnst Ilang-Ilang II. Earnst has seven years of experience in Mental Health as an intern, clinician, and supervisor. He received his Social Work Licensure for the District of Columbia in January 2020. As a member of the mental health community himself, he aims to challenge the stigma of mental illness and create a safe environment for our students.

Classrooms remain in hybrid learning when no more than 30% of students either test positive or are quarantined. Above that threshold, the entire classroom shifts to virtual learning. How each classroom operates is determined based on thresholds that are described more fully HERE.

Celebrations of learning are more than a display of student work and more than a party at the end of the year. The events invite students to reflect on and articulate what they have learned, how they learned, questions they answered, research they conducted, and areas of strength and struggles they experienced. They are powerful opportunities to make learning public.

These Expos often include artwork, research results from an experiment, written work, tests, or other projects. At Expo, students demonstrate more fully what has been learned, beyond just a grade on a report card. It also generates ideas for other students that will help improve their own work and to establish standards for excellent work from all students.

Staffing Update - New Team Members

Joseph Rodriguez, Interim Chief School Officer, and Laura Fitzgerald Fonseca, JF Cook Assistant Principal

Please join us in enthusiastically welcoming two outstanding bilingual educators who are joining our staff in January. Dr. Joseph Rodriguez will begin work on the 24 of the month as our interim Chief School Officer, supporting principals across both campuses. And Laura Fitzgerald Fonseca began working on Tuesday the 18th as Assistant Principal at J.F. Cook Campus. Both leaders have begun meeting colleagues and acquainting themselves with our school community. As our interim CSO, Joseph will be with us for 18 months – contributing to both near-term stability and the opportunity for greater stakeholder involvement in the more time consuming search for a permanent CSO. We are eager for families and caregivers to have opportunities to meet both our new colleagues - and we know too that everyone understands that our shared focus is the education of our students and supporting our teachers in this difficult period. Please thus expect that your children will likely meet Joseph and Laura before they will have a chance to meet with families.

Jennifer Hammond and Alina Thouyaret, instructional coaches

We are also excited to confirm that experienced instructional coaches Jennifer Hammond and Alina Thouyaret will continue through the spring as consultants, expanding the capacity of our coaching team to deliver support for teachers. With the addition of Jennifer and Alina, Mundo Verde now counts on five coaches, including full- time staff member Heleena Moon. Working one-on-one with teachers, this team provides critical training, resources, feedback, and modeling of quality teaching practices that align with our innovative educational model and mission.

Charley Smith, Social Worker

Our team also expanded earlier this month when Charley Smithjoined us as a social worker in residence. As such, she brings additional capacity to complement the services of mental health professionals currently supporting individuals and groups across both campuses with student mental health and urgent family needs. Charley brings two years of experience in schools and will complete her master's degree in Social Work in May 2022.

As DC continues to offer additional Covid-19 testing options, we are sharing more information.

PreK Program

Rocketship Public Schools is hosting a vaccination clinic on January 29 at their Legacy Prep (4250 Massachusetts Ave. SE Washington, DC) from 10:00am-6:00pm. All are welcome! If your child is symptomatic, regardless of vaccination status, or in quarantine due to close contact of a confirmed positive Covid-19 case, a negative PCR test is required before returning to school. A rapid test will no longer be accepted as the basis for return as those were only used for screening after the winter break.

Breakfast and lunch for students who are participating in virtual learning are available from both Mundo Verde (provided by Genuine Foods) or at DCPCS open sites.

Mundo Verde - Meals are distributed daily at Calle Ocho Campus from 2:45 - 3:15pm at the northern front school door. To register for meal pick up you must complete this form.

Engagement Opportunities, 2022

We are expanding opportunities for engagement among school leaders and families and caregivers. As further described here in English and Spanish, in addition to regular, monthly meetings with principals Netta and Jenn (Coffee with the Principal), we invite families and caregivers to meet informally with leaders during digital “office hours,” to gather quarterly for a “State of the School” report and discussion, and to participate in Equity Dialogues. Shuttle Bus Registration from Eastern Market to J.F. Cook Campus is Now Available!
Deadline January 26

For families interested in a shuttle bus from Eastern Market to J.F. Cook Campus, preliminary registration open, however, the cost increased significantly to make it financially feasible. The school will only be able to run the transportation service if there are approximately 18 riders with enough full-price families to subsidize the cost.

Please read carefully the FAQ, fees, and interest form below. Registration interest form is due January 26, 2022, and will be based on a first come first serve basis with priority given to families with no other way to get to school.

EXTENDED DAY PROGRAM

Reorganized Rosters

We started the After School Program on Jan 6 with rosters reorganized by daytime animal or plant cohort. Students are now more likely to be in a group with students from their daytime cohort. This reorganization is a necessary response to the health challenges we face facilitating contact tracing and reducing exposures.

Extended Day Program Expansion

While we have accommodated many families in the program since the start of the school year, we recognize that we have not yet been able to accommodate everyone and continue to have families on our waitlists in each grade. We are actively hiring staff to meet the needs of families on the waitlists. We continue to invite families to join us on a weekly basis and to make room for siblings when we do so. If you would like to know what your waitlist status is, please email extendedday@mundoverdepcs.org.

The Student Support Team (SST) provides an array of services and supports to students and their families; these services and supports focus on positive academic, physical, and social/emotional/behavioral outcomes of students.

NEW! Staffing Update - New Team Members

Joseph Rodriguez, Interim Chief School Officer, and Laura Fitzgerald Fonseca, JF Cook Assistant Principal - Please join us in enthusiastically welcoming two outstanding bilingual educators who are joining our staff in January Dr. Joseph Rodriguez will begin work on the 24th of the month as our interim Chief School Officer, supporting principals across both campuses. And Laura Fitzgerald Fonseca begins work on Tuesday the 18th as Assistant Principal at J.F. Cook Campus. Both leaders have begun their visits, meeting colleagues and acquainting themselves with our school community. As our interim CSO, Joseph will be with us for 18 months providing both near-term certainty and the opportunity for greater stakeholder involvement in the more time consuming search for a permanent CSO. We are eager for families and caregivers to have opportunities to meet both our new colleagues - and we know too that everyone understands that our shared focus is the education of our students and supporting our teachers in this difficult period. Please thus expect that your children will likely meet both Joseph and Laura before they will have a chance to meet with families.

Jennifer Hammond and Alina Thouyaret, instructional coaches - We are also excited to confirm that experienced instructional coaches Jennifer Hammond and Alina Thouyaret will continue through the spring as consultants who expand the capacity of our coaching team to deliver support for teachers. With the addition of Jennifer and Alina, Mundo Verde now counts on five coaches, including full- time staff member Heleena Moon. Working one-on-one with teachers, this team provides critical training, resources, feedback, and modeling of quality teaching practices that align with our innovative educational model and mission.

Charley Smith, Social Worker -Our team also expanded earlier this month when Charley Smith joined us as a social worker in residence. As such, she brings additional capacity to complement the services of mental health professionals currently supporting individuals and groups across both campuses with student mental health and urgent family needs. Charley brings two years of experience in schools and will complete her master's degree in Social Work in May 2022.

Celebrations of learning are more than a display of student work and more than a party at the end of the year. The events compel students to reflect on and articulate what they have learned, how they learned, questions they answered, research they conducted, and areas of strength and struggles. They are powerful opportunities to make learning public.

The Expo may include artwork, research results from an experiment, written work, tests, or other projects. At Expo students demonstrate what has been learned more clearly than just a grade on a report card can. It also gives other students ideas that will help them improve their own work and helps to set a standard for excellent work from all students.

OJO! Is Your Child Symptomatic Or In Quarantine?

If your child is symptomatic, regardless of vaccination status, or in quarantine due to close contact of a confirmed positive Covid-19 case, a negative PCR test is required. A rapid test will not be accepted as those were only used for returning after the winter break.

OJO! Has Your Child Tested Positive for Covid-19?

If your child has tested positive for Covid-19 in the last 90 days and you have not notified us, please provide proof of the previous positive test to the to covid19@mundoverdepcs.org and include when symptoms may have started. Individuals who have tested positive in the last 90 days, completed 10 days of isolation, and subsequently recovered should not take PCR testing for the next 90 days.

NEW! New City Covid-19 Testing Initiatives

DC will be providing additional Covid-19 testing options. We will share more information as soon as it is available.

Rapid Tests

Rapid Tests for PreK and Kinder families only on January 14 and 21: Rapid tests are available for pick up at the front desk or put in student’s bags who are present each Friday for families to test on their own over the weekend. You are not required to submit a negative test to return but please submit any positive result to covid19@mundoverdepcs.org and do not return to school. This is only available to PreK and K from the city given the availability of vaccinations for these age groups. We will not be able to supply rapid tests to other grades however please check https://coronavirus.dc.gov/ for locations to pick up free rapid test in the city.

Rapid tests for staff on January 14 and 21: rapid tests are available for staff these two Fridays to test on their own over the weekend. They are not required to submit a negative test to return but will submit any positive result to covid19@mundoverdepcs.org.

We do not know if Rapid Tests will be available beyond January however we will continue with our weekly PCR testing program as normal.

At Home PCR Tests

At home PCR tests for confirmed close contacts of a positive COVID-19 case: the city is launching an at home PCR testing program for close contacts at school. This will go directly to families and will require sign up. We will share information when we receive it from the city.

We are expanding opportunities for engagement among school leaders and families and caregivers. NEW! Shuttle Bus Registration from Eastern Market to J.F. Cook Campus is Now Available!

Families have shown interest about the possibility of a shuttle bus route from Eastern Market to J.F. Cook Campus only. The registration form for this route is now open, however, the cost increased significantly to make it financially feasible. The school will only be able to run the transportation service if there are approximately 18 riders with enough full-price families to subsidize the cost.

EXTENDED DAY PROGRAM

Reorganized Rosters

We started the After School Program on Jan 6 with reorganized rosters by daytime animal or plant cohort. Students are now more likely to be in a group with students from their daytime cohort. This reorganization is a necessary response to the health challenges we face facilitating contact tracing and reducing exposures.

Extended Day Program Expansion

While we have accommodated many families into the program since the start of the school year, we want to recognize that we have not been able to accommodate everyone and continue to have families on our waitlists in each grade. We are actively hiring staff where the waitlists are longest. We continue to invite families to join us on a weekly basis and to make room for siblings when we do so. If you would like to know what your waitlist status is, please email extendedday@mundoverdepcs.org.

Immigration Advice and Referrals - Ayuda

Ayuda will be offering free immigration advice and referrals over the phone on Friday, January 28. Clients who are interested should call 202-787-5311 on January 21 between 10:00am-2:00pm to schedule a phone appointment. Flyers with more information can be found in English and Spanish. This virtual clinic is part of an ongoing effort to provide free, low-barrier consultations for clients who want immigration screening, brief advice, and referrals. The Coffee with the Principal provides families and school leaders a common space to get to know one another; learn about school initiatives and priorities; share concerns, ask questions, and provide feedback; and cultivate a community committed to the success of every student.

Two Dialogue Groups Launch This Month

As a part of our commitment to advance equity across both campuses in our school, Mundo Verde continues to partner with Kindred for SY21-22. Among the many pieces of work that this partnership supports are Dialogue Groups. Four caregiver/family groups took place during SY20-21 and four more are planned for this school year. Kindred is now recruiting for the first two groups that will launch, one at each campus this month.

These groups offer a safe and brave space for building genuine relationships and learning how we can create a more equitable school through collective action. Throughout 10 sessions, families will discuss topics related to identity, race, and power.

If you are interested in advancing equity and racial justice at Mundo Verde, please consider joining a Dialogue Group. Please see this flyer to learn more about our partnership.

OJO! School Closed January 3 & 4 to Support Covid-19 Safety Protocols & Free Antigen Tests for Pick Up

As we enter a new and unpredictable phase of the Covid-19 pandemic, and head into the holidays, charter and DCPS schools across the District of Columbia are experiencing high numbers of positive cases among staff and students. In line with Mayor Bowser’s citywide plan to support a safe return of students from winter break, Mundo Verde will be closed to students on January 3 and 4, 2022 to allow for staff Covid-19 testing and for the distribution of at-home Covid-19 tests to families for each Mundo Verde student. OSSE will be issuing instructional day waivers so we will not need to make any adjustments to our calendar at this time.

Staff will be required to test using our Shield T-3 saliva based testing program on January 3. Based on results of staff tests, we will communicate what adjustments may be necessary to our planned Wednesday January 5 opening. As a temporary shift to virtual learning is likely for some or all students in the coming weeks, teaching staff will have time on January 3-4 to prepare materials and technology necessary for virtual learning.

Students will be required to submit a negative PCR or rapid antigen Covid-19 test to covid19@mundoverdepcs.org taken on January 3 or later in order to return to school on January 5. On January 3-4, families will be

Able to pick up free rapid at-home antigen tests for each Mundo Verde student on Tuesday Jan 4 between 8:30am-5:30pm. If we receive the delivery from the City earlier, we will provide times on January 3.
Able to access school meals at community access sites during Mundo Verde’s closure to students (See list of sites below in the “Meals” section of the family update).
Able to pick up a chromebook to facilitate any potential transition to virtual learning, should that be necessary on Tuesday Jan 4 between 8:30am-5:30pm.
Be asked to return student COVID-19 results to school via email to covid19@mundoverdepcs.org prior to their return to school.

The spread of COVID-19 is likely to increase in the coming weeks in ways that present new challenges to our planning and decision making.We recognize the stress and uncertainty that this highly unpredictable situation presents for our families and staff and will do our best to communicate decisions we or city officials may need to make as soon as we can.

January 3, 12:00-3:00pm

We are happy to announce that Mobile Testing LLC will be at both of our campuses on January 3 from 12:00-3:00pm to offer PCR COVID-19 testing to families. In order to participate, you must fill out the previously distributed form to either submit your insurance information or indicate you are not insured. You can also fill this form out upon arrival.

REMINDER! Covid-19 Travel Guidance for this Holiday Season

Mundo Verde continues to add a layer of protection against Covid-19 for our community by using some of the recommended DC DOH travel guidance. You can read the City’s full guidance here:

Unvaccinated Individuals: Require a negative PCR Covid-19 test within 3-5 days of return from travel in order to return to the building if you travel outside of the DMV area. Individuals can return to school immediately upon providing the negative result, and are not required to wait the full DOH recommended 7 days of quarantine to return.
Fully Vaccinated Individuals or Individuals Who Tested Positive for Covid-19 in the Last 90 Days: Are not required to quarantine or test, and can return immediately assuming no Covid-19 symptoms are showing. Individuals are required to participate in the school’s asymptomatic testing program the week of their return.

OJO! Updates to our Weekly Covid-19 Testing Program

Mobile Testing LLC has lost funding for testing and in order to continue our partnership, Mobile Testing will need families’ insurance information or the indication that an individual is uninsured. There will be no out of pocket cost for families, however, you MUST fill out this form in order for us to continue our robust weekly COVID-19 PCR testing program:

Please fill out the form for each individual getting tested

If you do not have insurance, that can also be indicated on the form and you can still participate. Our testing partner, Mobile Testing LLC, will bill your insurance at no cost to you.

With submission of this form, we will be able to continue critical weekly testing of students and staff with Mobile Testing LLC, in addition to our saliva based program. Thank you for supporting this important layer of safety during this critical time.

REMINDER! Covid-19 Vaccination & Vaccine Cards for Student Records

We highly encourage student vaccination to help protect our community, especially given the high level of community spread in the District.

There are multiple free vaccination sites available in DC. Please find more resources about vaccines here or talk to your healthcare provider.

As of the week of December 13, the student population at Calle Ocho Campus is approximately 15% vaccinated and J.F. Cook Campus is approximately 11% (for the purpose of this data, vaccinated means received two doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech series. In order to be considered fully vaccinated against Covid-19, it is two weeks after the final dose in the series).

Although the vaccine is currently not required for our students, if your child is vaccinated, please submit the card you received as proof of your child's vaccination by using this form.

Unless we have proof of vaccination on file, your child will be considered NOT vaccinated and will thus be required to follow quarantine protocols for unvaccinated individuals when considered “close contact”.

REMINDER! Return to School After Exposure for Fully Vaccinated Students

Starting in January 2022, fully vaccinated students will be able to return after one full school day even if identified as a close contact to a positive Covid-19 case, assuming no Covid-19 symptoms.

This extra day allows teachers the time they need to ensure quality in-person and virtual instruction for all students.
Department of Health guidelines recommend that vaccinated individuals still get tested after exposure even if they are not showing symptoms.
The school will test eligible vaccinated students and staff using our Shield-T3 saliva based testing program following exposure.

NOTE: Fully vaccinated is considered two weeks after the last dose of the vaccine series.

REMINDER! Booster Shot Required for Staff

Mundo Verde will now require all eligible staff to receive a Covid-19 vaccine booster shot as recommended by the CDC as an additional layer of protection, particularly given the transmissibility of the Omicron variant. Several staff have already received their booster and we are working with those staff who have not or are becoming eligible.

Equity is Fundamental at Mundo Verde:
Join a Growing Group of Families Working to Improve Equity in Our School

On both the J.F. Cook and Calle Ocho campuses, families and caregivers are building networks to foster greater inclusion and equity in our school. To support this commitment to advance equity across both campuses, we have engaged Kindred to help us create a safe and welcoming space for genuine relationships and hard conversations. What is equity? What does it look like in practice? How does it intersect with race and power?

As part of this work, Calle Ocho families have created Comunidad, which meets twice a month on Wednesday evenings. Similarly, a group of families/caregivers committed to equity’ is gaining momentum at J.F. Cook, and now meeting regularly on Thursday evenings.

Thank You For Your Generosity!

Our Winter Holiday Teacher and Staff Appreciation Collection has ended for this year and we’re so pleased to share the results!

Thanks to the overwhelming generosity of the Mundo Verde community of families and caregivers, a total of $29,733.34 was collected across both campuses. Funds were distributed over the winter break in the form of a Visa electronic gift card. A total of 241 electronic gift cards were purchased (this includes full time staff, part time staff, contractors and members of PMM). Electronic gift cards were made available via email between December 24 and 31st. Full-time staff each received gift cards worth $130, part-time staff received gift cards worth $65.

Each year, families and caregivers are invited to participate in this collection during the holiday season to express their appreciation to our tremendous staff, with logistical support from the school administration. This provides for a streamlined process and the ability to reach all Mundo Verde personnel with an equitable distribution of funds. The collection recognizes all individuals, those we see every day and those who work behind the scenes, for the loving, enriching environment they create for our children.

Participation in the collection is optional and dependent on each family’s financial circumstances. Regardless of whether you’ve chosen to express your appreciation through the fund or in another way this year, we’re humbled and immensely grateful for the outpouring of support you show for our staff. Thank you!

Annual Year-End Campaign: Community Recovery Fund to Support Urgent Family Needs and the Wellness of our Staff

We thank all the families, caregivers, and friends who contributed to our Community Recovery Fund in November and December. We understand for many year-end is not the best time to make a gift beyond family celebrations. That is why we purposefully extend our campaign through mid January and provide the alternative of setting up recurring giving starting at $10 a month.

Holiday Tree Composting

DC is offering holiday tree composting! Holiday trees and greenery will be collected from homes that receive DPW curbside sanitation collection between January 11 and February 5, 2022. Items collected during this period will be composted; in the spring, the mulch will be provided to residents at no cost. Click here to learn more.

The spread of COVID-19 is likely to increase in the coming weeks in ways that present new challenges to our planning and decision making. We recognize the stress and uncertainty that this highly unpredictable situation presents for our families and staff and will do our best to communicate decisions we or city officials may need to make as soon as we can.

Admissions Season Has Come for Siblings of Students Enrolled at Mundo Verde

As of December 13, siblings of students enrolled at Mundo Verde may apply with sibling preference through the common lottery: MySchoolDC.org. There is a place on the application to indicate that a sibling is currently attending Mundo Verde. Mundo Verde has generally been able to accommodate admissions for all of our students with younger siblings, but sibling, preference does not guarantee entry. Application deadline is March 1, 2022.

5th Grade Families - Applying to DC International School

As of December 13, fifth graders may apply with transfer preference to DC International School (DCI) for 6th grade through the MySchoolDC.org application. OJO - the firm deadline for using the transfer preference is March 1, 2022!

On December 8 a letter to fifth grade families/caregivers was sent with information about DCI Events for Rising 6th Graders. Click here if you didn’t get to see it.

HEALTH & SAFETY

NEW! In-Person and Virtual Learning for Fully Vaccinated Students

As of right now, all students, even those who are fully vaccinated will still enter virtual learning if identified as a close contact, however, with proof of vaccination, they may return to in-person classes on the earliest return date (day 8 following exposure, rather than day 11). It is still recommended that students get tested as early as day 5 after potential exposure regardless of vaccination status.

Per the CDC guidelines, individuals are considered fully vaccinated:

2 weeks after their second dose in a 2-dose series, such as the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines, or
2 weeks after a single-dose vaccine, such as Johnson & Johnson’s Janssen vaccine

December 15, 6:00-7:00pm

Please join the Office of the Deputy Mayor for Education (DME) on Wednesday, December 15 from 6:00-7:00pm for a virtual town hall with the Howard University College of Medicine. At the event, medical students and staff will share the critical importance of residents ages 5-11 receiving the pediatric Covid-19 vaccine and answer attendee questions about the vaccine.

UPDATED! Immediate Changes to Our Covid-19 Testing Program

Unfortunately, as of this last week, Mobile COVID Testing LLC is no longer able to support our free all student Thursday Covid-19 testing program. We are still randomly testing at least 20% of the student population as well as symptomatic individuals and our staff with our shield T3 testing program.

As more of our student population becomes fully vaccinated, and with the unexpected immediate loss of our school wide testing program, we will be evaluating in the coming weeks what additional adjustments might be necessary in our testing program in the new year.

UPDATED! Possip Survey Results

November survey results report opinions of more than 300 parents/caregivers. Thank you!

As shown in the chart below, more than 80% of parents/caregiver respondents report in November that they are either “happy” or “mostly happy,” with our school - 54% and 28%, respectively. Survey results demonstrate a deep reservoir of support and appreciation within the community, despite the recognition of serious challenges. To that point, we can also see that almost one-fifth of respondents indicate that they are currently unhappy at Mundo Verde. From written survey responses as well as other communication we are receiving from families/ caregivers, we understand that there are three underlying factors driving concerns and unhappiness: staffing challenges, behavioral issues, and a sense that the school’s responses to questions posed by families are either delayed or incomplete

The second chart below tracks how families/caregivers view the significance of children now being eligible for the Covid-19 vaccination. As indicated, two-thirds of respondents feel better or safer under these circumstances while roughly 25% see this as not making a significant difference.

NEW! Admissions Season Has Come!

Siblings of Students Enrolled at Mundo Verde As of December 13, siblings of students enrolled at Mundo Verde may apply with sibling preference in the common lottery on MySchoolDC.org. There is a place on the application to indicate that a sibling is currently attending Mundo Verde. Mundo Verde attempts and has historically been able to accommodate admissions for all of our families with younger siblings, however, given the limited number of spots, preference does not guarantee entry. Application deadline is March 1, 2022.

NEW! 5th Grade Families - Applying to DC International School

As of December 13, fifth graders may apply with transfer preference to DC International School (DCI) for 6th grade on the MySchoolDC.org application. OJO - this preference is only granted to families who apply by the deadline of March 1, 2022!

As a part of our commitment to advance equity across both campuses in our school, Mundo Verde continues to support families/caregivers in building genuine relationships with each other through our partnership with Kindred. Among the many pieces of work that this partnership supports are Dialogue Groups. Four groups took place during SY20-21 and four more are planned for this school year. We are now recruiting for the first two dialogue groups that will launch, one at each campus, in January 2022.

Dialogue groups offer a safe and brave space for building genuine relationships and learning how we can create a more equitable school through collective action. Throughout 10 sessions, families will discuss topics related to identity, race, and power.

NEW! Administrative Changes to Our Thursday Covid-19 Testing Program

In the coming weeks, there will be administrative changes to our Thursday Covid-19 testing program in partnership with Mobile COVID Testing LLC. Moving forward, they will need to collect insurance information. You will not be charged for the service. If you do not have insurance, you can still participate in the Thursday weekly testing. Mundo Verde will not be collecting insurance information and we will provide instructions as soon as we receive them. This does not apply to our saliva based Shield-T3 testing program.

In DC it is currently required to test 20% of the unvaccinated student population weekly. We have been testing well above that, including vaccinated individuals.

We will be evaluating in the coming weeks whether to make adjustments to our testing program in the new year as more of our student population becomes fully vaccinated.

REMINDER! Collecting Vaccine Cards for Student Records

As our students continue getting the Covid-19 vaccination, we can reduce the number of students needing to be quarantined as close contacts if you help us maintain complete children's vaccination records.

Although the vaccine is currently not required for our students, you can share with us the card you received as proof of vaccination by using this form. Please only submit the form once, and after your child has received both vaccination shots.

Staff Departures and Family Communications

None of us like to be surprised when our kids know more than we do. Our goal is to always ensure that families hear directly from the school about all staffing changes before they hear it from their children. And, we know we do not meet this goal 100% of the time. It seems like it should be easy to ensure something so important, but it is not. Why not?

Some staff know they are planning to leave well in advance and give us weeks or even months of notice. However, pandemic burnout, health, and other stress-related and personal reasons more often than not come up quickly and lately we have had too many situations where we have almost no notice. To retain as many members of our team as possible, we are actively working with all staff to provide added support, incentives and coaching.
When a staff member does notify us of his or her plans to resign, our first effort is to engage and see if the decision is final or subject to negotiation. Sometimes this is successful in establishing a scenario in which the staff member will stay; other times not. And once this threshold is crossed, we no longer control the timetable. One person might tell students the next day and then notify the school the day after. Others might ponder it for a few days, reflect, notify us that they are leaving in a day, or a week, or a month. And they then may also notify students either immediately or not.

We know how much this matters and are committed to getting information to parents/caregivers first. We recognize that this may not be possible in every instance, but we will inform families as soon as we can.

Your support following the designated pick-up times helps teachers implement structured activities and supports students routines such as our snack & chat time from 3:45-4:15pm, structured activities from 4:15-5:15, and centers or outside play from 5:15-6:00pm where possible.

REMINDER! Covid-19 Travel Guidance

Mundo Verde is following DC DOH travel guidance as another layer of protection for our community:

Unvaccinated Individuals: Require a negative PCR Covid-19 test within 3-5 days of return from travel in order to return to the building if you travel outside of the DMV area. Individuals can return to school immediately upon providing the negative result, and are not required to wait the full recommended 7 days or quarantine to return.
Fully Vaccinated Individuals: Are not required to quarantine or test, and can return immediately assuming no COVID-19 symptoms are showing. Individuals are required to participate in the school’s asymptomatic testing program the week of their return.

Masks are Still Required for Anyone On-campus in Buildings or on the Grounds

Rules for schools, childcare and other places where people congregate are NOT changed by the Mayor’s recent announcement about indoor masking. Masks must be worn properly at all times on the Mundo Verde campuses (other than when eating/drinking). More information here.

REMINDER! Collecting Vaccine Cards for Student Records

We can reduce the number of students needing to be quarantined as close contacts if families help us maintain complete student vaccination records. Although the vaccine is currently not required for our students, please share the card you receive as proof of vaccination – by using this form. Please only submit the form once, and after your child has received both vaccination shots. Unless we have this information on file, your child will be considered NOT vaccinated and will be required to follow quarantine protocols for unvaccinated individuals.

NEW! Staff Departures and Family Communications

Some staff know they are planning to leave well in advance and give us weeks or even months of notice. However, pandemic burnout, health, and other stress-related and personal reasons more often than not come up quickly and lately we have had too many situations where we have almost no notice. To retain as many members of our team as possible, we are actively working with all staff to provide added support, incentives and coaching.
When a staff member does notify us of his or her plans to resign, our first effort is to engage and see if the decision is final or subject to negotiation. Sometimes this is successful in establishing a scenario in which the staff member will stay; other times not. And once this threshold is crossed, we no longer control the timetable. One person might tell students the next day and then notify the school the day after. Others might ponder it for a few days, reflect, notify us that they are leaving in a day, or a week, or a month. And they then may also notify students either immediately or not.

We know how much this matters and are committed to getting information to parents/caregivers first and as soon as we can. We recognize that we may always not be able to deliver, given the extraordinary circumstances we find ourselves in today. We continue to work together to communicate information to families even under the tightest of timeframes.

Annual Year-End Campaign: Community Recovery Fund

As our community continues to recover from the pandemic we will again dedicate our year-end campaign to initiatives that support urgent family needs and the wellness of our staff.

Donations will support:

Mental Health partnerships that support our staff and families
Subsidized and discounted access to Extended Day programming
Urgent family needs such as grocery store deliveries and gift cards
Regular wellness activities for teachers and staff

A Easy Way to Show Appreciation to Our Teachers and Staff This Holiday Season

Mundo Verde families/caregivers have traditionally run the Holiday Annual Teacher and Staff Appreciation Collection during the month of December. This tradition, inspired and organized by families every year, funds a streamlined and equitable demonstration of appreciation to all teachers and staff in the form of a monetary gift. Through a contribution to the Holiday Annual Teacher & Staff Appreciation Collection, each family/caregiver has a chance to recognize all staff before dismissing for winter break - from the classroom teacher to the front desk staff to the kitchen team and everyone in between.

Note that, per IRS rules, gifts to individuals do not qualify as charitable donations.

Call for Dialogue Group Participants!

As a part of our commitment to advance equity across both campuses in our school, Mundo Verde continues to partner with Kindred for SY21-22. Among the many pieces of work that this partnership supports are Dialogue Groups. Dialogue Groups are safe and brave spaces for building relationships and learning how we can create a more equitable school.

If you are interested in advancing equity and racial justice at Mundo Verde, please consider joining a Dialogue Group. Four dialogue groups took place during SY20-21 and four more are planned for this school year. Kindred is now recruiting for the first two dialogue groups that will launch, one at each campus, in January 2022. REMINDER! Covid-19 Travel Guidance

Mundo Verde is following DC DOH travel guidance as another layer of protection for our community:

Unvaccinated Individuals: Require a negative PCR Covid-19 test within 3-5 days of return from travel in order to return to the building if you travel outside of the DMV area. Individuals can return to school immediately upon providing the negative result, and are not required to wait the full recommended 7 days or quarantine to return.
Fully Vaccinated Individuals: Are not required to quarantine or test, and can return immediately assuming no COVID-19 symptoms are showing. Individuals are required to participate in the school’s asymptomatic testing program the week of their return.

Arrival and dismissal times are the busiest for families/caregivers, staff, and students. To improve this transitional time, we have secured access to Providence Parking Lots located at 817 Varnum St NE. Please park in the areas designated for Mundo Verde. Please do not park in any of the on-campus lots or spaces, do not drive or park in alleys, and do not double-park on Varnum or 8th because this delays the completion of arrival and dismissal by increasing traffic congestion. It also strains our relationship within our neighbors.

Seeing students playing with the recently installed, new outdoor equipment is a pleasure for us all! Please help us remind students to be good stewards of our campus and environment by taking care of the equipment and furniture and nurturing our garden beds.

Healthy Snacks For All Students

Mundo Verde provides a healthy snack during normal school hours to all students. To support this service, families who do not qualify for Free or Reduced Meals (FARM) are charged $20/month per student. This fee is added to Infinite Campus accounts on a monthly basis. Last year, due to Covid, the snack fee was waived. Snack fees are shown in your invoice and are due on the 10th of each month. Students who participate in after school services receive an additional snack included in the program for no additional cost.

As an award-winning green school, one of our goals is to reduce or eliminate the use of single-use disposable plastics, including water bottles. As Our Weather Changes, Make Sure Your Children are Ready for Outdoor Recess!

As we begin to experience fluctuating temperatures, please prepare your children with the appropriate gear - especially for days when there is a chill in the air. We go outside when it is cold! We recommend a jacket and head covering, and appropriate protection for hands, feet and head. When there is inclement weather we may at times opt for indoor recess. If you need any assistance providing these items for your family, please contact the front desk of your campus.

THIS WEEK! Covid-19 Vaccine Clinic for 5-11 Year Old at J.F. Cook Campus
Nov 17 and Dec 8, 1:00-7:00pm

We are excited to host a Covid-19 Pfizer vaccination clinic for 5-11 year olds in partnership with Albertsons! Your child/ren must be able to attend both sessions in order to register. Due to staffing reasons and the length of the clinic, we had to reduce the slots to 220 slots available. If we cannot fill them with Mundo Verde students, we will open it for the broader community to participate so please sign up as soon as possible!

First dose: November 17

Second dose: December 8

Time: 1:00-7:00pm (appointment lasts 20 minutes approx.)

Location: J.F. Cook Campus (30 P St NW)

On November 8, we started Unit 2 of the program. This unit will run from Nov 8 - Jan 28.

At Calle Ocho Campus, the music specialist began working with PreKB and 2A. The art specialist began working with PreKB and KB. Soccer began for KA, 1A. Programming at J.F. Cook Campus will continue with the water expedition.

So each family has more time with teachers this year, Parent Teacher Conferences have been lengthened to 30 minutes conferences. We have thus added a second date for Conferences on November 17 after dismissal from 2:00-5:00pm.

In addition to testing and other assessments, parent-teacher conferences are an important way for families to hear from and discuss with teachers the strengths and weaknesses they are observing in their child – across both social-emotional and academic indicators. Especially for young learners, the development of baseline social-emotional skills are critical building blocks for academic learning. Parents/Caregivers (Kinder through 5th grade) will receive student progress reports on November 10 that can be discussed with their child’s teacher during their conference. Families with PreK students will receive a detailed report directly from their child’s teacher during their conference. Discussing student progress reports help develop strong partnerships with caregivers so that whenever possible learning at home and learning at school are aligned and supportive. Students are generally not present during these conferences.

Covid-19 Vaccine Clinic for 5-11 Year Old at J.F. Cook Campus
Nov 17 and Dec 8, 1:30-6:00pm

We are excited to host a Covid-19 Pfizer vaccination clinic for 5-11 year olds in partnership with Albertsons! Please note that at the time of the first shot (Nov 17), registration is also required for the second vaccination (December 8). Insurance is not required. We will have 300 slots available for a two-dose vaccination.

Registration, scheduling, consent forms and related materials will be shared as soon as they are available to us.

The clinic will operate at J.F. Cook Campus (30 P St NW) and will be open to all Mundo Verde families, regardless of campus.

Clinic dates and times are as follows:

First Dose - Nov. 17: 1:30-6:00pm
Second Dose - Dec. 8: 1:30-6:00pm

REMINDER! Covid-19 Travel Guidance

Mundo Verde is following DC DOH travel guidance as another layer of protection for our community:

Unvaccinated Individuals: Require a negative PCR Covid-19 test within 3-5 days of return from travel in order to return to the building if you travel outside of the DMV area. Individuals can return to school immediately upon providing the negative result, and are not required to wait the full recommended 7 days or quarantine to return.
Vaccinated individuals: Are not required to quarantine or test, and can return immediately assuming no COVID-19 symptoms are showing. Individuals are required to participate in the school’s asymptomatic testing program the week of their return.

Shelter in Place and Fire Drills

As part of our risk management practice, we conduct monthly fire drills and also shelter in place drills at least on a quarterly basis. This is an important practice for our students and staff to make sure we are prepared to keep everyone safe in the event of an emergency. We do recognize that this practice can cause some students to be worried or upset. Teachers remind students of the drills and practice the protocols but it is also helpful to discuss them at home.

REMINDER! No Parking on Alley or Sidewalks - J.F. Cook Campus

The safety of our community is our priority. A member of our community was hit by a car while walking on the sidewalk on P St crossing the intersection of the alley. Thankfully there were no injuries. While this incident did not happen during arrival or dismissal, the vision of the driver was obstructed by a van parked in the alley.

Help us ensure the safety of our community by only parking in legal spots.

Safety reminders:

You are driving in a school zone
Always give the right of way to pedestrians
Maintain the 15 mile/ hour school zone speed limit
Avoid dangerous maneuvers such as U-turns and three-point turns while on P Street

If your children missed Picture Day, retakes are scheduled for Tuesday, November 16 on both campuses.

Reminders:

All students wear their Mundo Verde t-shirt.
As part of having student profiles updated in our Student Information System (SIS), ALL students will get their individual photo taken regardless of their Media Release authorization.

How to order: All photo ordering will be entirely online. You will be able to choose from many wonderful photos. Parents will receive an e-mail alert with a link to the student’s gallery when photos are available.

EXTENDED DAY PROGRAM

UPDATED! Extended Day Program Expansion Update

After a year of hiatus, we endeavored at the start of the school year to provide 160 students with Extended Day services by September 7. By October 1, we were providing services to 200 students. By early November we expanded to include 254 students. 144 students participate at J.F. Cook Campus, and 110 students participate at Calle Ocho Campus. We know more families also are keen to participate in the Extended Day Program, and we continue to hire and onboard staff as fast as possible. To meet the greatest needs of the community, on November 15 we will open another First grade group at J.F. Cook Campus.

NEW! Program Schedule Unit 2

We are starting Unit 2. This unit will run from Nov 8 - Jan 28.

At Calle Ocho Campus, the music specialist will begin working with PreKB and 2A. The art specialist will begin working with PreKB and KB. Soccer will begin with KA, 1A. Programming at J.F. Cook Campus will continue with the water expedition.

In anticipation of regulatory approval, Mundo Verde plans to offer a vaccine clinic for the two-dose Pfizer Covid-19 shot for ages 5-11.

Through development of a partnership with Albertsons, the school has secured 300 slots for this two-dose vaccination. Please note that at the time of the first shot (Nov 17), registration is also required for Dec. 8 - time for the second vaccination.

UPDATED! Possip Survey Results

From the first three of our regular text-based Possip surveys, we have heard from 523 families/caregivers. We want again to urge everyone to please take a moment when you receive the next survey to share your thoughts and feelings about Mundo Verde as well as those of your child/ren.

Among respondents to the most recent survey, we are seeing that 72% of you are happy or mostly happy. Respondents have provided inspiring feedback and also flagged for us areas of concern including:

Appreciation for how excited students are to share the new things they're learning in school
Praise for loving, enthusiastic, and engaging teachers
Concerns about school safety
Availability of support for students with special needs; and
Requests for expanding the availability of aftercare

Halloween no Candies and Costume

Although we know sugary candy is incredibly appealing for many children (and adults), as a school we do not celebrate Halloween. Please do not send your child/ren to school with candy or in a costume on Monday, November 1.

As a school, Mundo Verde embraces and celebrates social events aligned with our mission and priorities. School celebrations focus on cultural heritage and diversity, and we invite families to share their diverse experiences. As a school we refrain from celebrating days or traditions that may show preference of one group over another or do not align with our school policies. Hence, we do not celebrate holidays such as Halloween, Valentine’s Day, and holidays of a solely religious nature. For families who value holidays that are not observed at the school, we encourage you to continue the celebrations at home.

We are operating one extended day class at each campus for every grade and an additional four classes in grades where we are seeing the most demand. Currently, we are serving approximately 236 students and continuing to hire new staff and crosstrain team members in order to continue expanding our program during the month of November.

Parking Reminder - Calle Ocho Campus

Safety is our priority, and arrival and dismissal times are the busiest time at school. A reminder that families should not park on campus at the following times:

Monday-Friday, 7:30-9:30am;
Every day except Wednesday, 2:30-4:30pm; and
Early dismissal Wednesdays,12:30-2:00pm.

We have secured permission for Calle Ocho families and staff to use Providence Parking Lots located at 817 Varnum St NE. Please park in the designated areas, or at least 2-3 blocks away from the school. Remember to arrive at your assigned time block 1, 2, or 3. In addition, please YIELD to pedestrians and grant access to emergency vehicles.

We appreciate your understanding!

Notifying Changes in Dismissal for Your Children

If your family needs to pick up your children before dismissal, please email attendance@mundoverdepcs.org in advance or call the front desk to let the school know about the change in dismissal. All students leaving the school before dismissal must be picked up at the front desk. In order to keep our students safe, please do not pick up your children on their way to and from the park or playing outside.

OJO! Early dismissal has to be logged into our Student Information System and can affect your children’s attendance records.

NEW! Halloween no Candy and Costumes

Consistent with a commitment to diversity, sustainability and wellness, we ask families to not send your child/ren to school with candy or in costume prior to Halloween on Friday, October 29, nor Monday, November 1.

As a school, Mundo Verde practices a commitment to embrace and celebrate social events that are aligned with our mission and priorities. Our school celebrations focus on cultural heritage and diversity, and we invite families to share their experiences. As a school we refrain from celebrating days or traditions that may show preference of one group over another or do not align with our school policies. Hence, we do not celebrate holidays such as Halloween, Valentine’s Day, and holidays of a solely religious nature. For families who value holidays that are not observed at the school, we encourage them to continue the celebrations at home.

MAP Testing

MAP testing begins this week, starting with upper grades at J.F. Cook Campus and moving down grade levels as we advance. We plan to send assessments results along with academic reports on Wednesday, November 10. Grade levels will receive a notification as their date approaches via email. MAP assessments are implemented in grades Kinder through 5th grade.

NEW! Parking Reminder - Calle Ocho Campus

Safety is our priority, and arrival and dismissal times are the busiest time at school. We remind families not to park on campus during the following hours: 7:30-9:00am AND 2:30-4:00pm on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. From 7:30-9:00am AND 12:30-2:00pm on Wednesdays.

Calle Ocho has permission to utilize Providence Parking Lots located at 817 Varnum St NE, Washington, D.C. 20017. Please park in the designated areas, or at least 2-3 blocks away from the school. Remember to arrive at your designated block 1, 2, or 3. YIELD to all pedestrians. Thank you for helping us ensure our campus is accessible to emergency vehicles in the event of an emergency.

OJO! Early dismissal has to be logged into our Student Information System and can affect your children’s attendance records.

Proactively Keeping Our Community Safe

Students are part of the digital age, where the internet can be an excellent resource for information and connecting people, but it also can be a point of vulnerability for children if they don't use it safely.

One dangerous trend on social media is the 'Devious Licks' challenge, which encourages children toward destructive and dangerous behavior, asking students to post videos stealing, vandalizing or showing off items they've stolen, primarily from their school.

The safety of our community is a priority, and these types of behaviors threaten the safe environment of our schools. As a community it is our responsibility to impress upon our children the importance of being safe and respectful while using social media.

All students have the right to a safe, positive, and respectful school environment in order to promote learning. We invite you to please have a conversation with your child(ren) and help them to navigate safely on the internet.

As we continue to evaluate and improve our protocols, a reminder that we are adjusting dismissal blocks at Calle Ocho starting tomorrow, October 18

Kinder will dismiss at 3:20pm (instead of 3:30pm) on M, T, Th, F.
Second Grade will be switched to 3:30pm (previously 3:20pm) on the same days.

We are thrilled to once again be able to announce Picture Day, since last year students did not have a chance to have photos. All students will get their individual school picture taken, due to Covid recommendations and distancing requirements, class photos will not be taken.

Reminders:

All students wear their Mundo Verde t-shirt.
As part of having student profiles updated in our Student Information System (SIS), ALL students will get their individual photo taken regardless of their Media Release authorization.

Student pictures will be available for families to purchase. Families will receive individual emails with instructions to order pictures.

Healthy Snacks For All Students

Mundo Verde provides a healthy snack during normal school hours to all students. To support this service, families who do not qualify for Free or Reduced Meals (FARM) are charged $20/month per student. This fee is regularly added to Infinite Campus accounts on a monthly basis. Last year, due to Covid the snack fee was waived. Starting on October 5 snack fees are shown in your invoice. All invoices are due the 10th of each month. Students who participate in after school services receive an additional snack included in the program for no additional cost.

An Important Bridge - Classroom Liaisons
Are You Interested in Volunteering?

We are Crew, not passengers. Central to Mundo Verde’s community culture is the inspiration that it is only by working together that we can live the values that brought us all to Mundo Verde. None of us are bystanders. As volunteers, classroom liaisons embody this spirit. The school is tremendously grateful for the initiative of SY21-22 volunteers in identifying liaisons for our 45 classrooms across both campuses. As an important bridge, linking families to the classroom and providing support to teachers, classroom liaisons uphold our core values, ESPICA: empathy, speak your truth, perseverance, inquiry, collaboration, and appreciation. Classroom liaisons actions support increased belonging and engagement of our diverse family community. We invite all caregivers to email Cristina Faz (cfaz@mundoverdepcs.org) if you are interested in being a classroom liaison at either campus or learning more about the role. Each classroom can have more than one classroom liaison, so let us know if you are interested!

¡Yo amo el español! Celebrate our Love for Spanish

Mundo Verde celebrates our love for Spanish with our annual Yo amo el español campaign. Students are given opportunities to share about games, activities, and favorite words in Spanish. While most of this happens at the classroom level, all parents and guardians are invited to join us for a virtual Coffee with the Principal where the conversation will be anchored in the value of a bilingual education, our biliteracy model, and ways in which you can foster your child’s love for Spanish at home.

NEW! Proactively Keeping Our Community Safe

NEW! Covid-19 Support Student Meals

Clear and consistent communications are an essential part of managing the Covid-19 challenge our community faces. It is in this spirit that we are sharing with you that members of our staff who support school meals at J.F. Cook campus tested positive for Covid-19. We have notified the Department of Health and those identified as close contacts. Our layered Covid-19 health and safety procedures have been followed, including closure of the impacted areas, as needed, and strict cleaning and disinfecting protocols. As required by the DC Department of Health, we also have a Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) plan as part of our regular practice of food and health safety in order to serve school meals. This includes wearing gloves whenever handling food, wearing hairnets and frequently wiping services among others.

We are planning to continue serving school meals at J.F. Cook campus supported by our back-up staff. In the case we are not able to serve meals, and require a vendor to provide us with meals, we will notify families with the details.

Dismissal Carline Discontinued at Calle Ocho Campus

As you have probably noticed, after careful consideration of our capacity to ensure safe and efficient campus dismissal, we are no longer able to support a carline during dismissal at Calle Ocho Campus. Please park in designated legal parking spaces in the neighborhood as outlined in the arrival and dismissal procedures. The carline is not open to parking during dismissal and is used only for bus pick up. Families are welcome to continue to use the carline in the morning for drop off.

To the 447 parents and caregivers who have responded to the first two Possip surveys, we thank you!

We are seeing from the just completed survey that 92% of respondents are happy or mostly happy with Mundo Verde–and we are deeply grateful for that tremendous support. We are also very much aware that challenges remain, especially related to logistics at dismissal, adjusted quarantine procedures, and limited uniform availability. We also know that many of you would love to hear more from teachers. As we continue to tackle existing and new challenges every day, please know that teachers, staff, and your school leader truly appreciate your words of support and encouragement for all that has been accomplished since the start of school.

With Hispanic Heritage Month underway, Mundo Verde celebrates our love for Spanish with our annual Yo amo el español campaign. Over the next couple of weeks your child will be given opportunities to share about games, activities, and favorite words in Spanish. While most of this happens at the classroom level, all parents and guardians are invited to join us for a virtual Coffee with the Principal where the conversation will be anchored in the value of a bilingual education, our biliteracy model, and ways in which you can foster your child’s love for Spanish at home.

NEW! Dismissal Carline Discontinued at Calle Ocho Campus - Oct 4

After careful consideration of our capacity to ensure safe and efficient campus dismissal, we will no longer be able to support a carline during dismissal at Calle Ocho Campus starting October 4. Please park in designated legal parking spaces in the neighborhood as outlined in the arrival and dismissal procedures. The carline will not be open to parking during dismissal and be used only for bus pick up. Families are welcome to continue to use the carline in the morning for drop off.

Weekly Covid Dashboard

For up to date information about our Covid cases and resulting quarantines, we are publishing a weekly Covid-19 dashboard. The dashboard displays data on screening tests performed, quarantined classes, partial classes quarantined, positive cases identified from asymptomatic screening, and the current number of students excluded due to symptoms or quarantine.

Covid-19 Updates

No Linkages Between the Positive Cases Department of Health (DOH) contact tracers have indicated that the number of positive cases and quarantines we are seeing is consistent with other schools doing the same large volume of asymptomatic testing. There have also indicated that there have been no determined linkages between the positive cases or spread within the school.

Quarantine of “Close Contacts” While we have worked and implemented measures to only quarantine part of the class, we have only been able to do that in one case. Moving forward, we will default to closing the entire class unless we can be 100% sure in identifying a smaller group of close contacts. Although DOH is behind in reviewing cases due to the volume, they have verified close contacts identified by Mundo Verde.

Discontinuing Rapid Testing After three weeks of screening testing using both Covid-19 rapid and PCR tests, we transitioned away from weekly asymptomatic rapid testing for individuals given the evidence of false positives and false negatives, particularly among young students.

Student Quarantine / Access to Virtual Learning

If your child tests positive for Covid-19 while at school or is confirmed as a close contact of someone with Covid-19, you will be contacted immediately and asked to pick your child up as soon as possible so that they can quarantine (if the information becomes available over a weekend, you will be asked to keep you child at home during the quarantine).
The day following your child’s start of quarantine, you will receive instructions for virtual learning and how to access a chromebook.
During quarantine, teachers will regularly communicate with you regarding further instructions for learning.
We use Zoom for students to access live learning, and Firefly for students to access activities, directions, and tasks. In order to proactively facilitate access to Firefly when their children are quarantined, families/caregivers were sent student login information in mid September.

NOTE: Virtual learning is not available for students who are home sick or in a delayed return to school due to travel.

Calle Ocho's Compost Cooperative

With daily and simple regular efforts, everyone can help reduce the impact we have on our planet! In support of our sustainability mission and to reduce the environmental footprint of our campus and nearby community, Mundo Verde is introducing a three-bin hot compost system to our Calle Ocho campus this month. Through this program, community members have the opportunity to divert food from the landfill and help spread the word that food does not have to be trash.

We need your help to pull this off! We are seeking at least one co-op manager to get started and will add on one or two more managers as our cooperative grows. Ideally, our co-op managers will be members of our school or neighborhood community.

EXTENDED DAY PROGRAM

We are now operating one extended day class at each campus for every grade and an additional two classes in grades where we are seeing the most demand. Currently serving approximately 200 students, we are continuing to hire new staff/cross train team members in order to expand our program during the month of October.

We are regularly sending out invitations to join our program. We ask you to check your emails (check your Spam), respond to the invitation, submit your FARM form if you have not already, and make your payment. This is a time sensitive process where our ability to accommodate families depends on the timeliness of your response.

Effort to Accommodate Siblings

We understand that families with more than one child are not inclined to accept their slot when a sibling is not also accepted into the program. We are making an effort to accommodate siblings as best as possible where capacity permits.

Does your daughter like the outdoors? Does she want to engage more with her community? Does she want to develop her leadership and creative skills? If your daughter answered yes to any of the above questions, she should join Calle Ocho Campus’ 2nd Grade Girl Scouts troop for this school year!

We aim to foster fun opportunities where members can develop their unique leadership skills, practice stewardship of their community and environment, engage with nature, cultivate creativity, and strengthen friendships.
Meeting every other Sunday from 3:00 to 4:00pm at Turkey Thicket park beginning in October.

Arrival & Dismissal - Calle Ocho Campus

We recognize that picking up your children at an urban school like Mundo Verde can be crowded, stressful, and somewhat chaotic. Releasing hundreds of students in roughly the same time periods is inherently a challenge. We are adjusting and refining as much as possible. If you have the option, please park around the corner and walk to meet your child. It can reduce stress for everyone!

Reminder: Please remember that family members are not allowed inside any campus facilities, due to Covid-19 protocols, and we are unable to make exceptions.

Arrival and dismissal are staggered this year. Please make sure your child arrives during their designated time block, especially for car riders
PreK arrival block is 8:30-8:40am. PreK students may enter the building earlier (between 8:10-8:30am) if accompanied by an older sibling
Being on time for arrival helps teachers with a smooth transition from breakfast to morning meeting
Families with siblings should pick up their children at the latest assigned dismissal block.
CAR LINE - Please ensure car seats are located on the passenger side.

New safety measures - Effective Monday, September 13 the playground equipment at J.F. Cook Campus will be closed during dismissal from 3:10-3:45pm (12:50-1:15pm on Wednesdays). We understand the importance of play and community building as well as health and safety. Too much congestion during dismissal is difficult to manage for the school.

We’ve heard from 314 families on this first pulse check (text based survey). We are seeing that 86% of you are happy or mostly happy with Mundo Verde this week. We appreciate your responses to the bonus question that capture more fully the diverse views within our community.

This week we heard members in the school community share examples of praise and appreciation as well as concerns and questions.

Praise for a successful return to school that includes supportive teachers and students who come home excited to be on campus again
Appreciation for communication from the school regarding updated protocols and procedures
Questions about carline logistics and ways to smooth out pick-up and drop-off, including the availability of buses and extended day
Desire for more feedback about communication from teachers, so families know more about classroom activities
Ideas about streamlining the transition to remote learning when students are required to quarantine

EXTENDED DAY PROGRAM

NEW! Extended Day Program Expansion

We have successfully launched our program and are serving 145 students across the network. Our goals for the next 4 weeks are to continue establishing routines with the student groups, accommodate siblings as best we can, and hire 19 more associates to support ongoing expansion.

Our expansion in the next few weeks will begin in the grades where we have the most students waitlisted. Our longest waitlist is 86 students in Calle Ocho PreK. We are opening a second group in PreK starting on Sept. 27 at Calle Ocho.

Supporting the Hart Family

As you all may know, a couple weeks ago our school experienced the loss of one of the youngest members of our school family, a kindergarten student from the Chayotes class (Calle Ocho Campus).

NEW! Calle Ocho's Compost Cooperative

With daily and simple regular efforts, everyone can help reduce the impact we have on our planet! In support of our sustainability mission and to reduce the environmental footprint of our campus and nearby community, Mundo Verde is preparing to introduce a three-bin hot compost system to our Calle Ocho campus in October 2021. Through this program, community members have the opportunity to divert food from the landfill and help spread the word that food does not have to be trash.

Invitation Emails

Families who have recently received their invitation to participate in the extended day program, are highly encouraged to quickly respond to the invitation. Please check your spam!

PreK Families

Please send a second sleeping blanket to use during nap time on Wednesdays. These blankets should be labeled with your child's name. The blankets will be stored separately from the daytime nap blankets and will be sent home at the end of the month for washing. We thank you all for your patience as we prepare to accept another wave of students into the after school program! This week community-wide Covid-19 testing was administered to students on both campuses, coordinated with partners from LabCorp/Quest Diagnostics. Our internal contact tracing has enabled us to identify and contact those who might also have been at risk, and would thus have been required to quarantine. If you have not already been contacted, your child/ren do not need to quarantine and do not face any elevated risk. They should continue attending school as usual.

For full transparency, a weekly tracker of Covid-19 cases, positive and negative test results, and quarantine status will be posted shortly inside the Family Portal on the school website. Personal health information about individuals will always remain protected and confidential.

For families whose children are quarantined, we are working to support the challenging process of moving from in-person learning to quarantine to virtual learning and back to in person. We are communicating directly with those families. If your child is quarantined but you have not yet received details of virtual learning from their teacher or principal, please contact your campus front desk (Calle Ocho Campus - (202) 803-8967 or calleocho@mundoverdepcs.org and J.F. Cook Campus - (202) 750-7060 or info@mundoverdepcs.org).

COVID Testing Procedures - All Students Are Automatically Enrolled - Opt-Out Form

Effective September 7, all students are automatically enrolled in both programs for symptomatic and asymptomatic COVID-19 testing. Families/caregivers must OPT-OUT in order for their child to not be tested. NOTE: Students who have had COVID-19 in the last 90 days will not be tested to avoid false positives.

Effective Monday, September 13 the playground equipment at J.F. Cook Campus will be closed during dismissal from 3:10-3:45pm (12:50-1:15pm on Wednesdays). This is a family-created affinity space designed to promote the success and belonging of Black children at Mundo Verde. We aim to work cooperatively with our school's administration, which is actively seeking to improve experiences of, and outcomes for, Black students at Mundo Verde.

Extended Day Program Reminder

The program is limited to full time enrollment.

Families can pick up their children at either of the following time blocks:
- 5:15-5:30pm
- 5:45-6:00pm
- 6:00-6:30pm (Only for Extended Service Families)
