Food and Wellness

As part of our mission to be a sustainable school, Mundo Verde has a strong focus on FOOD. How we grow, source, and eat food connects so many aspects important to sustainable communities. Mundo Verde strives to educate the whole-child to be healthy citizens for life and to improve access to healthy food through our programs.

Healthy Locally-Sourced Meals

Our school meals are prepared and delivered daily by Wholesome Tummies, a small local caterer whose menu emphasizes sustainably sourced, seasonal, and culturally diverse dishes. Mundo Verde is a “no junk-food” and vending machine-free school. Our full Wellness Policy is shared in the Family and Staff Handbooks every year. To learn more about our menu and pricing and to sign-up for school lunch or breakfast, visit our School Meals page.

School Garden and Market

Our School Garden features vegetables and herbs, berries, fruit trees, and native pollinator plants. Teachers use the garden as a living laboratory to teach math lessons, science concepts, inspire nature poetry, and more. After School students run a School Garden Market that sells produce from the garden. All experiences in the garden deepen our students’ connection to and empathy for the natural world.

Stop by our School Garden Market to buy fresh fruit and vegetables from our garden and local farms! Every Tuesday, 3:30 - 5:30 pm.

Cooking and Gardening classes

Kinder - 5th grade receives 36 hours a year of Cooking and Gardening classes at Mundo Verde as part of our Specials program. We teach the full farm-to-fork cycle by engaging the students in every step of the process - from growing the food, to harvesting and cooking with it. Through this profound food education, students learn skills, habits, and knowledge that will lead to healthier lives.

Cookbook

Our Mundo Verde Cookbook is a collection of healthy and student-tested recipes. Most recipes are from our cooking class curriculum, with some special featured recipes from families and chefs that have partnered with our school. The mission of the Mundo Verde Cookbook is to bridge the learning at school with healthy practices at home.

Vision and Core Beliefs

Mundo Verde is committed to the optimal development of every student. We believe that for students to have the opportunity to achieve personal, academic, developmental, and social success, we need to create positive, sustainable, safe, and health-promoting learning environments at every level, in every setting, throughout the school year.

Community Compost Co-operative

Families, staff, and school neighbors are all welcome to join the compost co-operative. Members drop-off their household’s organic waste in Mundo Verde’s outdoor compost bins and receive a share of the decomposed compost every few months. Interested in joining the co-op? Email libby.lyon@foodcorps.org for more information.
