Kristin Scotchmer, Executive Director

Kristin Scotchmer is the lead founder and executive director of Mundo Verde. She is passionate about Mundo Verde’s vision and has substantial knowledge of Mundo Verde’s philosophy, educational design and curriculum, as well as its operations and management. Kristin brings more than 17 years of professional management, governance and volunteer experience with nonprofit organizations, including expertise in management, board development, strategic planning and fundraising. She has considerable experience strengthening the capacity of small community-based organizations working to create change in the Washington, D.C., region, nationally and in Mexico. In addition, having lived in Guatemala for the first thirteen years of her life, Kristin is bilingual.

Kristin has completed coursework toward an M.A. degree in Latin American studies from the University of Texas at Austin and has a B.A. degree in political science and Latin American studies from the University of Chicago. Kristin lives in Washington, D.C.’s Petworth neighborhood and has two daughters, one of whom is a first grader at Mundo Verde and the other is a 7th grader at D.C. International.


Dahlia Aguilar, Founding Principal

Dahlia brings 20 years of school leadership and instructional experience in bilingual elementary and high school education. She has worked for over 10 years to strengthen the practice of teachers and leaders in public and public charter schools with multicultural and multilingual student bodies.

As Assistant Principal of Columbia Heights Educational Campus (CHEC), Dahlia helped launch the school’s first ever dual immersion middle school program and led the development of a professional learning community of teachers and school staff to support, push, and create effective practices among teachers. Dahlia’s teaching career began 23 years ago in early childhood development and early elementary programs, teaching pre-kindergarten and kindergarten in both bilingual immersion and English as a second language programs in District of Columbia public schools. Later, she served as the Director of Teaching and Learning for the National Council of La Raza where she designed professional development for educators serving Latino student populations nationally.

Dahlia is a Teach for America alumna and a former New Leaders for New Schools Fellow/Principal Resident. She earned a B.A. in English from Georgetown University, a M.A. in secondary education from Texas A&M University and a M.S. in educational leadership from Trinity University. Dahlia lives in Washington, D.C., and is the proud parent of a Mundo Verde student.

The school is led by an active Board of Directors, who works with the executive director and the principal to run Mundo Verde effectively. The Board of Directors has an active committee structure that guides policy development, implementation, oversight and decision making. The current board is well-connected in the community, committed to Mundo Verde’s mission, and reflects expertise in education, nonprofit management, law, architecture, marketing and communications, and resource development as well as deep roots in the District of Columbia.
